NEW YORK OUTRAGE.

« ASSAULT OX MR. BOOKER WASHINGTON. Thero was an extraordinary 'occurrence'in New York on a recent Sunday night, when Mr. Booker Washington, the eminent educator and philanthrope jst, was brutally assaulted and severely injured, narrowly escaping being killed.' Air. Booker Washington had entered the lobby an an apartment house and spent a few moments examining the names under the bells in quest of a friend on whom he intended to call. Finally he had rung tho bell, when tho occupant of another apartment cauio . out and niacin a savage attack on him. Mr. -Booker Washington ran into tho street, followed by his assailant, who there renewed tho attack. Both were seized by the police, and taken to tho station house, where Mr, Booker Washington was promptly released, and removed to hospital, whila his assailant was held for felonious assault. Mr. Booker Washington was unable to leave hospital to appear in court tho next day. His assailant first pleaded that he thought Mr. Booker Washington was attempting burglary, and afterwards said that ho bad insulted his wife. Many leading Americans, including President Taft and Mr. Carnegie, expressed their sympathy with Mr. Washington. President Taft's remarkable) holographic letter to Mr. Booker Washington, expressing unbounded sympathy and undiminished confidence, produced a profound impression, and probtbly accords with tho sober judgment of the great majority of the people. _ The President refers to the "wounds inflicted by insano susnieion or viciousuoGa."
