AMATEUR CHAMPION SCULLS. (Rec. May 7, 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, May 7. There were only three starters for the intrr-State amateur champion sculls yesterday, tho race resulting :— M'Villy, Tasmania 1 Towns, N«w South Wales... 3 Stevens, Victoria 3 M'Villy won by four lengths.
In Eomo notes on the outlook for the champion sculls on April 26, the Sydney "Eefere'e" said:—"Cecil M'Villy, the Tasmaniari representative, is the' first to arrive.. Stationed at Gladesville, ho receives :somo hints from ex-champion Gep. Towns. ■It'will'bo remembered that Air. M'Villy speut somo time across hore last year, and profited by the tuition then received from Mr. Goo. Towns. Advices to hand 'state that Mi-.' John E. Towns, the New South. Wales representative,' has done a considerable amount of work, on the Hunter Kiver. lie will need to bo in first-class fettle to again bring the title of amateur champion back to New South Wales'. Queensland will not have a representative in the fculls this year, but Victoria is represented by Mr. H. E. Stevens. Perhaps no State more than New South Wales regrets that it was impossible to' accept Mr. C. E. Stone's nomination to compete from; New Zealand. But the strict homo definition of amateurism does not permit of a reinstated man competing in inter-State fixtures. Somo of Tasmania's best oarsmen wero excluded on similar grounds. However, a resolution is on the business paper this .year dealing with the subject. Probably tliis year's conference will strengthen the position taken up by NowSouth Wales. The lino separating amateur from professional sport is at present clearly drawn, and, considering tho advance that professionalism has made in some other sports, it would, it is submitted, bo unwiso to weaken the definition."
