CARGO CASES RIFLED. FIVE* SAILORS IN COURT. Christchurch, May G. Acting-Detective Canioy and Sergeant Ryan, of Lyttelton, angled live sailors belonging to the lndrubarah on a charge of stealing goods from tho cargo. A largo Humility of stolen property was found in tho .seamen's quarter.-, and live menSydney William Lane, George Lambert, Albert Henry Loo, Lawrence Herrick, and John Beckett—were charged, before M<*.<rs. C. f. I'crrier, J.l'., and 1 , . W. Anderson, J.l'., with having (on. or about April S on Iraartl the Indrabarah) stolen seven ladies' coats valued at «CS 155., eight table covers valued at ,£l2, one petticoat valued at 7s. (Id., two clocks valued at 10?., and one melal rule valued at 10s. Gd., the total value being .£22 .%.
Charles Cedric 31. Felling, chief officer, stated that when tho vessel was in Sydney on April 8, be noticed that four cases amongst the caTgo had been pillaged. One case had contained ladies' coats, one table covers, another underwear, and (he fourth clocks. Tile accused were A.B.'s on the vessel, and, while in port, 'hey had access to the holds. On the occasion with which the charge was concerned Herrick was in the hold watching cargo in No. 3 'tween decks. The pillaged goods w;erc from Nos. 2 and 3 holds , , and were a portion of the cargo for Sydney. At this stage the case was adjourned until Friday nest, APPREHENDED ON MAIL BOAT. The police have been advised that Edward Rodger.*, alias Valentine Turner, and a woman giving the name of Mrs. Eodgors, were arrested upon the arrival of the mail steamer from New Zealand, having in their possession the whole of the jewellery stolon from Kohn's shop in Queen Street, Auckland, on March 19, when tho premises were entered by a window from the roof of adjacent promises, and the contents of the window and a caeo were cleared, despite tho fact that the shop, as usual, was left fully lighted and open to the view of anyone passing. RAIL RATES ON TIMBER. THE MINISTER APPEALED TO. Duncdrn, May G. Eeplying to a request of the Farmers' Union" to abolish differential freights between Australian aud New Zealand timbers, the Hon. J. A. Miller promised to lay the mailer before Cabinet. He pointed out that, tho Australian tariff shut out Now Zealand goods, and it was the Government's policy to protect local industries. Probably if the railway freights were made uniform tho Custom duty would have to be raised. Replying to other requests for freo return railage on empty crates, etc., the Minister said he was altogether averse to placing articles on tho free list. Ho intimated that tho workshops were busy constructing additional sheep trucks. STOCK TRANSIT TOO TARDY. Dunedin, May G. A deputation from the Fanners' Union this morning complained to tho Hon. J. A. Miller about the delays in transit of stock on railways of tho South Island. The Minister said he nould not understand delays having occurred, because instructions were to always forward stock in preference to other goods. Ho would issue instructions that no such delay should take place in future. A RECENT SPORT EPISODE. Dunedin, May G. At a meeting of tlie committee of tho Dunedin Amateur Athletic Club last night it was decided that tho club delegates should give notice of motion at. next meeting of tho Otago Centre that tho resolution of the centre revoking the appointment of Messrs. Marryat and Pollock as Otago delegates to tho New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association bo rescinded. HOUSE BURNT DOWN, Dunedin, May 7. A six-roomed house at lioslyni owned and occupied by Mr. W. Rodgers, clerk, was destroyed by fire at an early hour this morning. It was insured 'in the Standard Office for £150, nnd the furniture in the Australian Alliance Office for £150. MAGNIFICENT CONVENT. Wanganui, May 7. Archbishop Redwood this afternoon laid the foundation stone of the Convent of tho Sisters of St. Joseph. This will bo a magnificent building, costing about .£20,000. It is situated on St. John's Hill, and commands a view of the whole of the town and out-districts. THE MANA OF HUGH J. WARD. Dunedin, May G. Tho movement initiated by Mr. Hugh Ward and Miss Grace Palotta to provide a women's pavilion at tho hospital has been taken up enthusiastically. Over .£IOOO has been promised already. MONEY FOR ERIN'S ENVOYS. Wanganui, May G. At a meeting of Homo Rule, sympathisers last evening ,£l3O was handed in by collectors. It is expected .0250 will be raised here. FIRE-A CLOSE CALL. New Plymouth, May G. A. six-roomed touse at Glenavon, ,i few miles out of town, was destroyed by fire yesterday morning. It was owned and occupied by William Rowe, who escaped in a blanket and trousers, losing everything, including "=£lo in money, and a new bicycle. The house was insured for .£250, and the furniture for ,£75 in the Ocean. BRIEF MENTION. Wanganui, May G. The first Oriental rug factory established in the Southern Hemisphere has been started at Wangauui. Gisborne, May G. Tho census of the- Gisborue Borough shows a population of 8191, and with outlying suburbs 9529. At last census tho Gisborne Borough figures were SGGO. ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES. O PERISHED IN THE FLAMES. (By Tclegraph-Preag Association.) Dunedin, May G. The house of W. Neylon, of Arrowtown, was totally destroyed by fire early this morning. Neylon perished in the flames, and his wife and family had a narrow escape, one daughter being slightly burnt. Tho remains of tho un f "rtunate man were charred beyond recognition. RAILWAY FATALITY. The Wellington police have received a telegram stating that John Kelly, aged GO, bachelor, was killed by an accident at the Timaru railway station on Saturday evening. It is stated that tho deceased was employed at . tho Pareora freezing works, and previously at Ngahauranga.
