Tiotli he and To Arai are engaged at Hastings, so that there will be an opportunity of gauging their form before the Wanganui meetiirj. During tho Blenheim meeting an offer of ,C 250 was made for the Euroclydon gelding Beacon, bill it was not rntertained. It is understood that the offer was on behalf of an Australian owner, and that, had the liof'o been purchased, he would have bsen put to tho hurdle business i\t once. On Friday morning, at Trentham, Madam Madcap, carrying a good weight, ran five furlongs in lmin. 3sec., and beat Effort, who started with lier, by fully thirty yard?. On Saturday, IT. Cults took the Clanranald filly to Hastings. I'. E. Jones, who came up from "Riccarton on tho s'amo morning, also made the journey there. T. Pritehard lias been engaged to ride Winchester in the Wanganni Steeplechase, and W. Porter, , who f left for Blenheim .by the Mapourika on Tuesday last, had a vathnr unlucky experience. ; Ho failed to awoke on Wednesday morning till-nearly- 7 a.m., and; by that time, the ilaiJourika was many knots on her way to' Nelson. On. arrival at the latter port, (he horseman was compelled to engage a motor-car to take him on to Blenheim, which he reached the same evening at 8 p.m. While absent, ono of his prospective mounts, Long Tom, had succeeded in winning the Maiden race at Itiverlands. 'Bobrikoit is fast coming back to liis best form again, and, despite his steadier of lflst. 61b. in tho. Porangahau Handicap on Wednesday, he is sure lo have many i supporters on tho machine. J. W. Lowe left for Hastings on Saturday with Gold Lace, who claims an engagement in tho Hawke's Bay Cup. Oil board the same truin was Mon Ann, who •is engaged in the Porangahau Handicap. Tho latter mare has been running so well lately that it would bo' no surprise to sod her repeat her winning performance of last year-; especially if tho going liappeiu to be'i'.good. It is understood that 0. Emerson will have the mount. H. Mallowes, who used to rido at the pony meetings at Miramar,. has been granted a jockey's license, and will shortly be seen riding in tho registered ranks. Mallowes can still rido about 7st. 71b.

THE RIDING OF WOOD HEY.

[To tho Editor.] Sir,—With your indulgence, I would refer to comments appearing in a contemporary on tho racing at the late Trentham meeting. I will not ask you-, nor your readers, to endure tho-affliction of- perusing the remarks in full. To bo brief, the writer in question states: "Woodhey finished a bad last in the Thompson Handicap, and in the Autumn Handicap she gave the field sis lengths' start, and ran on the outside all the way." Both statements are utter fabrications. The first day, after getting badly away in tho Thompson Handicap, she finished alongside Vice-Admiral, just in front of Sea Queen,' who had as many of Hie field behind as in front of her. On the second dny, Woodhey was again chopped out at the start, but ran behind the field on the rails the first half of tho wav. The writings of this irresponsible person aro very amusing when detailing the gallops on the training ground, as ho recently did of the dam of Grand Rapids, the old brood marc Whirlpool. It is a much more Ecrious matter, however, when his mis-statements take the form of a gross libel on a jockey. I fancy most patrons of the turf will agree that raeinj clubs havo a duty to perform in protecting jockeys from slander at the bands of any penny-a-liner who has been fortunate, enough to secure a complimentary tieket, as they have in punishing a jockey for wrong-doing.—l am, etc., •- FAIRPLAT.
