THE REFERENDUM.
BRITAIN SEEKS INFORMATION. By Telecraph—Press Association-Coijyrieht London, May 2. Mr. Lewis Harcour.t, Secretary of State for the Colonies, replying in the House of Commons to a question, said the British Government had requested the Earl of Dudley, Governor-General of Australia, to obtain a report from the Federal Ministers regarding the operation of the recent referenda in the Commonwealth. The announcement was received with Unionist cheers. Major Archer-Shee, Unionist member for Central Finsbury,, asked whether tho referendum had destroyed tho representative system in Australia. Mr. Harcourf: did not answer the question. "AN ABSITRI) SUGGESTION." (Rec. May i, 1.5 n .m.) Melbourne, May 3. Mr. W. M. Hughes, tho Acting-Prime Minister, says the suggestion that the Government has lost the confidence of the country over the Referenda is really mest absurd.
