CHRYSANTHEMUM SHOW.
(Dy Correspondent.) Palmarston North, May 3. The Manawatu Horticultural Society 3 chrysanthemum show opened tins afternoon. There wns a good attendance. It. is an excellent show, there being a fine exhibition of blooms, fruit, vegetables, home industries, etc. . The main feature, of course, is the chrysanthemums, and there are some magnificent blooms amongst the exhibits. Mrs. A. Harris, of Palmerston, ■is the principal exhibitor, and this lncly has secured first awards in nine ■ classes. Other first honours winners were ilessrs. V. Mason, J. H. Hall, A. Fly, J. -J. ■Whitehead, Mrs. Kiitherfurcl, and Mrs. Hcwctt. In the-amateur class for pot plants, Messrs .Bradfield Bros, took six fn'st prizes, other winners in this section being Miss Glendining and Mr. J. , J. Whitehead. In the open class, Mr. J. H, nail was the only winner. There was a fino display of vegetables, more- especially considering the unfavourable season. Mr. Westbury, of the Hutt, was a large exhibitor, and he secured ninn first prizes, including that for collection of nine varieties. Messrs. 1. Mason, T. J. Rogers. A. Whitehead, L. A.' Abraham, and C. E. Spocner also took first prizes in different classes. The exhibit of fruit was confined principally to apples. The collection of six varieties of five each was won by Mi\ J. Jones, who also scored in several other classes. In" the separate elates, Mrs. M'Mnrray was a largo, exhibitor, and scored heavily, winning six first awards. Other winners wero Mrs. L. A. Abraham arid Miss Glendining. The latter lady als.o won the prize for any other variety of fruit,with a fine basket of figs. There 'was not much competition in the decorative classes. In the adult class, Mrs. Mellsop was awarded the prize for tabk-centre, and Miss 11. Shute took a similar award in the children's class. Homo industries was a small exhibit, but the quality was above the average, and tho prizes were evenly divided. There was very-strong'competition in the classes for scones. Mrs. P. A. M'Hardio took first for tho girdle yarioty, Miss •Tickell for white scones, and Mrs. Spooner for those made-of whentmeal.
