, (By Telesrai>h.--SDCcial Correspondent.) War.ganuii May 2. Complaints are made of the Government's inaction as regards completing tho missing link in the Wanganui River Koad, near Kaorikia. The completion of tho three-milo gap is an urgent necessity to settlers, whose persistent agitation in the matter met-.with a promise a few months ago that the work would be jlonc during last summer. However, it. is not done yet, and the Chamber of Commerce has requested tho member for the district to ask the Minister what is the reason for the delay. The, Hon. G. Fowlds has intimated his intention to visit Wanganui next week to speak at a meeting in connection with the movement for establishing aY.M.C.A. in Wanganui, tho committee of which will start a ten days' campaign next week with the object of raising ,£6OOO for the erection of a building. The Gonville-Castlecliff Tramway Board has received word that the first consignment of steel rails is now on the way from England, and may be expected in about a month. Tho second lot of Australian hardwood sleepers is now due to arrive any day. Mr. W. Short sat to-day as a commission to apportion tho cost of the maintenance of the Wangantii Town Bridge among the various local bodies concerned, the position having changed of recent years owing to the creation of several new local governing areas. The following bodies are cited: Wangnnui and Wanganui East Borough Councils, Wanganui, WaitoUra, Waimarino, and Itangitikei County Councils, Gnnvillc and Castlcciiff Town Boards, mid the Harbour Board. Tho result of the first day's proceedings is that the liangitikci County Council has been struck out of the list of bodies responsible. A great deal of evidence will bo taken, and the proceedings may last several days.
