EUROPEAN MARKETS FOR MEAT.
: MR. KIDMAN NOT SANGUINE. Mr. Arthur Kidman, who is on his return from Lon'ion to Australia, has been inquiring as to tho possibility of opening up Continental markets for Australian nieat (says the Sydney "Telegraph's" London representative). Ho is not by any means sanguine about the prospects in this direction. He doss not think then is any likelihood of Continental markets being opened up for some time to come, for though the people of tho Continental countries other than the farmors: and largo land-owners are clamour- • ing for cheaper meat,, there is a serious obstacle in the shape of the influence of .the,, farmers and land-ownors' votes on political representatives, who aro practically told to bolt tho door against any meat importation scheme. Another subject which Mr. Kidman has been looking into is the quality of the meat exported from Australia to England. Hβ recognises that in the past much meat has been shipped which ought never ro have been allowed to leave Australia. Ho considers that the appointment of pro-perly-qualified inspectors to inspect at ship's side meat intended for export is an absolute necessity, if a good reputation for Australian' meat is-to be!cultivated . and maintained. In tho past tho shipment of meat totally unfit for export has been tho cause of placing tho reputation of Australian meat on far too low a otamlard.
