Branson is director and secretary of tho society. The seat of Mr. Ktliugham becomes vacant by eirluxion of timu on May 31. . • • Four deaths have' occurred in this district during the last.week. A good deal of- sickness is reported in the neighbourhood, and the accommodation at. the local Hospital is taxed. There is keen competition for the position of accountant to the Masterton Borough Council, . applications for which closed t'o-'dhy; . . "", The presentation of awards ill connection with, tho ladies' life-saving class of the Y.W.C.A. took place last night. The report of tho secretary showed that twenty-seven awards were obtained by tho class, during the season. Tho,prizes wero presented by Mr. P. L. Rollings, as follow:—Elementary certificates.—Misses Esme Dixon, F. Kerr, V... Olscn, C. Peters, arid V. Peters. Proficiency certificates.—Misses N. O'Dowd, A. Perry, E. Andrews, E. Petherick, and E. O'Lcary. Proficiency certificate and medallion.—Misses E. Waddington, A. O'Leary, Messrs. E. Perry, JV Tait, W. O'Brien, K. J. Pryor, and G. H.-Holder. Awards of merit.—Miss ' A. O'Leary, Messrs. G. 11. Holder, and A. Snowball. It is .reported that an attempt is to bo made to form a company to run an up-to-date boardinghouse -in Masterton. A prominent member of the Reform party will, it is expected, deliver addresses in Masterton and Pahiatua at an early date.

At the ordinary meeting of the local Oddfellows' Lodge last evening, a. fratprnal visit, was paid by about twenty members of the Cartertoiv Lodge. At the conclusion of tho. .business a. "social" was held, when numerous toasts were honoured. .. ..

The annual meeting of the Mastcrton branch of the Y.M.C.A. was Held last evening, ,J[r. R. L. Hollings (president) occupying the chair. The annual report sho,wed that a successful year had been experienced and that tho finances were in a satisfactory condition. Owing .to firessuro o£ private business, Mr. Hoiings found it .impossible to retain the position as president for a further term. Officers were elected as follow:—President, Dr. N. IT. Prior; vice-presidents, Messrs. A. Hcndrj-, G. Falla, .E. H. Waddington, P. L. Hollings, .T. Pryor, and D. Threadwell;, ordinary board members, Messrs. I!.' Sutherland. Goldsmith, and R. E. Jones; treasurer, Mr. C. lbbetson; honorary secretory, Mr. IT. M'Hattie. A voto of condolence was passed to the widow, and-family of tho late Mr. 11. Holmes.

Cases of tutu poisoning have been reported among the stock of the district, and it is remarked as singular that, while sonle cattle die from (he effects of eating the noxious shrub, others apparently suffer no ill-effecis. : - The first meeting of the /Wairarapa ministers' Association was held yesterday, when an interesting review of the work done at the World's Missionary Conference was given by the Rev.
