CONDEMNED MEAT.
AGITATION BY THE .IMPORTERS. The London correspondent of the "Otago Witness" stat«s that frozen meat importers in London are, fighting for quite .a considerable state in their struggle to get the City Corporation to act fairly in the matter of meat seizures. "The Incorporated Society of Meat Importers is sending a deputation to tho sanitary Committee of tho London Corporation to lay its representations before that body," continues the correspondent. "In brief, the position is this: Unless the importer condemned meat within twelve hours' notice gives an undertaking that he will re-export the stuff or go before a magistrate and prove that it is not intended for sale for human' food, tho authority mav seize the meat without giving a farthing recompense on its subsequent sale for manufacturing purposes. ■ "The Importers' Society demands that the importer shall bo allowed to give notice that such meat will not be solo as food, and, moreover, that the sanitary authority, on taking action for its - disposal by sa!o for other purposes than iood, shall pay the proceeds to tho owner, less reasonable deductions for expenses. Tho London importer-. :s really only, fighting for v;hat his Liverpool and Glasgow brethren possess, for in the latter city the importer is able to disnoso of such meat on his own account, and In Liverpool an allowance is given on meat seized. The Importers' Society has been wise to make its demands apply only to meat in ship or store, as complications would arise if ihe same, principle were asked for regarding meat once marketed. Tho Local Government Board already gives signs of a reasonable attitudo in this matter."
