OPENING OF SEASON. CHAMPIONSHIP FIXTURES. Senior Results. United (7) v. Wesley (2). Victoria College (3) v. Y.M.CA. (1). Karori (6) v, Wellington (0). The weather was splendid on Saturday for tho commencement of tho 1911 hockey season. Considering that the ground was rather heavy, play in most cases was fairly fast. United have commenced tho season very well; likewise Karori, and it looks extremely probable that these two clubs will—as the , games progress—make a bold bid for tho local cup. Last year's champions easily disposed of Y.M.CA. Following are details of the games:— UNITED-WESLEY. Shortly after tho start, it was apparent that the R-cds (United) wcro superior to their opponents. They were faster and used better judgment. Skilful play brought victory to their side. United pressed, , and Hatch conceded a corner to save Smythe notching a goal. The result from the "free-hit" was a goal off Jones's stick, tho ball having come from Smythe. Wesley shortly made their way towards the oppo.-ing side's goal, where Gapper made a few erratic attempts to score. Play was now getting faster. United using judgment in their striking. Despite this fact, Andrews lost them a goal through over-eagerness. Jones was again successful in notching a point, tho score thus reading United 2, Wesley nil. Thompson managed to add ono more goal for United. Shortly afterwards tho same player still. further increased his side's score. Within a few minutes Wesley had play in their favour, Birch making a good shot at goal, which was stopped. Smith • however followed up and secured Wesley's first goal. The spell ended: United i, Wesley 1. During the second spell Keys (Wesley) was successful, and for United .Tones scored twice, and Holland once. There was no further score added at call of time. Mr. H. V. Walton was referee. VICTORIA COUEGE-Y.M.C.A. College had a decisive victory over Y.M.C.A. Sava for an occasional piece, of good play on the part of Y.M.C.A. wtnjforwards, it is safe to say that- College had the best of the first spell. The- score of one goal to the credit of each side at half-time does riot clearly indicate the merits of the two teams. Plenty of hard work was done by the College eleven as a whole, and but for wild shooting when in the circle, the Collegians' score would have been larger. Con. Strack (College) opened the scoring account, and Loader for Y.M.C.A. secured a. goal, having received the ball from olf'A. Parton's stick. This was tho tally at. half-time.' During tho < second speil Fitt and C. Strack each notched a goal, making the final score read College 3, Y.M.C.A. I. G. Strack had a splendid opportunity of scoring, but his chance went with a rather wild shot at the net. Mr. Hollis was the referee. KARORI-WELLINGTON. This game opened somewhat slow, with players slightly out of form. G. Davies ied his baud forward after a few minutes' desultory play, and the ball was sent behind. Morpeth, goal-keeper for Wellington, had plenty to do afterwards. He deserves credit for his splendid saving. Karori were first to open the score, Lewer being successful. The Wcllingtonians kept up a pressure for a short while only to find Karori "on their tracks," the result being, a goal off U. Davies's stick. Thus ended tho first spell. Karori were prominent with a forward movement at the commencement of the second spell, but the game began to get slow. Both sides tired somewhat. Karori, however, held the "upper end of the stick" and two more goals went to their credit, per medium of Lewer and Hall. Hall again secured a goal, so also did Hunt. At call of time, the score was Karori G, AVellington 0. Mr. Gendall was the referee. JUNIOR GAMES. Metropolitan defeated St. Mark's by three goals to two. Kitching, Muldooii and Spiers contributed towards the scoring list. United beat Wesley by two goals to one. Bennett scored during the first spell for United. Wilson and Chapman scared for United and Wesley respectively in Hie. second spell. United had I lip best of the game. Mr. Carver was referee. THIRD CLASS. Wesley and Gregg's drew, each side scoring i goals. Wesley's scorers were Blackburn (2), Sanson, and M.irdou. Foully (2), Connor, and Smyth wore successful for Gregg's. Victoria College defeated Potono by 8 to 3. LADIES' CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES. Senior. Ramblers played against Hinemoa, but neither side scored. Mr. C. Strack was the referee.
