Ono of the largest gatherings of the kind ever'recorded in Gisborne was witnessed to-day; when the remains of Councillor. Jackson were interred at Makaraka Cemetery. The _lato councillor died as the result of falling oil a butcher's steel while at his work as .a slaughterman He was deservedly popular, and a tremendous crowd attended the funeral, close on seventeen hundred people walking behind the hearse. In addition there "wore TO vehicles. Tho cortege was headed by tho band of the Salvation Army, of which deceased was sergeant-major. " The Gisborno City Band was also in attendance, and the gathering was representative of all classes. There was an affecting .scene a!i tho graveside, and tho ceremony was an impressive one. CHARGE OF ASSAULT. Ashburton, April 29. A young man named Henry Charles Jtesservy was charged at the Magistrate's Court this morning with unlawfully assaulting an elderly man named Keuben George Wonnacott by striking him over the head and causing- grievous bodily harm. The case was the outcomc of a family feud, and the evidence showed that the attack was more or less unprovoked. Prisoner, was'fined .£5 (half of which is to go towards paying complainant's medical expenses), in default one month's imprisonment. Ho was also bound over to keep the peace for sis months under his own recognisances. Wonnacott received nasty wounds on the head, which niight have ended fatally, but is progressing favourably. SCHOOL BURNED. Eketahuna, April 29. The Alfredton correspondent of the "Express" advises tlmt tho Saunders Road School and ' its contents were destroyed by fire ou Thursday ovening. A bucket brigade saved the outbuildings and'garden tools. The cause is attributed to a defective chimney. ALEXANDRA PARK. Auckland, April 29. The Auckland Trotting Club has purchased Alexandra Park. It is probable the Rugby Union will be able to obtain a renewal of its lease. HOME RULE DELEGATES. Palmerston North, April 30. At a public mooting on Saturday it was resolved to accord a public reception to the Home Rule- delegates on the occasion of their visit.
