(From Our Special Correspondent.) , r • „ Masterton, April 23. .Messrs. C. Sowraan and C. M'Dougall who have just resigned their positions on the Masterton Borough staff, were last night the recipients of presentations from their fallow-workers Mr. E.Jj.Ues wool-classing instructor for the Wellington Technical School arrived last night. He holds a claps at linm to-day, and at Bideford on Monday. At the annual meeting of tho Masterton Boxing Club on Friday night, Mr V P. Whatman was clcetsd president, and Mr. W. Saville-Smith secretary and ■treasurer. A number of trophies were promised for competition in the coming season, which is expsctcd to bo highly successful. At a meeting of managers of tho Masterton Technical School, held last evening, the treasurer reported a credit of .£ll6 2s. Id. It was decided to start a veterinary class should a sufficient number of pupils be available. Mdlle. Dolores gave a recital in the Town Hall last evening to a most enthusiastic audience. The famous singer is spending u. few days in tho Mastertou district. Tho Mastfrton Boxing Club had last year an active membership of 58. This number is likely to be increased in the present season. . The census recently taken shows the number of occupied houses in Masterton to be 1150, and unoccupied 52. Not a single bankruptcy has been recorded in the Wairarapa during the month of April. During the present month twelve marriages, seven deaths, and eighteen births have been registered in Masterton. The funeral of the late Mr. Harry Holmes took place yesterday afternoon, and was very largely attended, settlers being present from all parts of the district. A nephew of the deceased and hands employed on the Matahiwi Station acted as pall-bearers. The confectionery shop of Mr. W. Wilkes was broken into some time on Saturday night, and a quantity Of confectionery stolen.
