THE MERCHANT SERVICE GUILD.
NO RESULTS FROM CONFERENCE. Yesterday a special meeting of the Merchant Service Guild was held for the purpose of receiving the report of the delegates who attended the recent conference with representatives of the Union Company at Dunedin. The purpose of tho conference was to discuss rates of wages and conditions of work. It is -understood that the Union Company declined to accept any of the proposals put forward by the Guild, but, on the contrary, mado 'some suggestions, as, for instance, that the present rate of. wages paid to captains in the fleet be reduced, and an increase be given to officers. As to the eight-hour day clause and overtime, the commissioners of the company declined to entertain the matter. In view of jbeappsjtion,-. the Guild has decided ito'-icfer the dispute to the Conciliation Council, ■ and eventually, if need be, to ; take it to the Arbitration Court. ~_,-.'.
