To-day all the Cabinet Ministers will be in the city with the exception of the Hon. T. Mackenzie (who proceeds t6 Taranaki) anil the Hon. A. T. Xgata, who is on the East Coast. The Hon. D. liuddo is expected to return to Wellington this morning from Chrislchurch. The Hon. T. Mackenzie, who has been paying a visit to the State farm at Levin, proceeds to Taranaki, where he will spend a few days. A London Press Association cable--' gram states that Lady Ward, who has, been suffering from a chill, is recover-' ing. Mr. Justice Cooper was a passenger for the south by the Maori last eveuingj Mr. J. P. Maxwell, managing director of the Paparoa Coal Company, is to leave Wellington for Sydney en route to Loudon on Friday next. Ho will travel Home, via Suez, by the Osterlcy. Mr. A. S. Le Socuf (director of the Sydney Zoological Gardens) left Wellington by the Moeraki last evening ou his return to Sydney. Although his stay in New Zealand was brief, Mr. Lo Soeuf declared himself charmed with the country and expressed an intention of returning in the near future to make a longer' stay in the Dominion. Mr. Lo Soeuf has delivered to the City Council the report upon the Newtown "Zoo," which he came lo Wellington to make. The document itself is" not as yet available, but its general tenor may ho readily anticipated. The director of the Sydney "Zoo" believes in making the captivity of animals as littlo irksomo as possible and favours providing them with dens, ou natural lines, rather than enclosed cages. At the same time Mr. Lo Soeuf recognises the necessity of keeping expenditure within reasonable bounds. Prqbably he will he content to advise gradual development, with an avoidance of all needless restrictions. With the situation of the."Zoo" Mr. Lo Soeuf unreservedly declared himself more than pleased. ' On the motion of Mr. R. C. Kirk, Mr. Eric Lyon was admitted as a barrister, and solicitor .yesterday by the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout).. Mr. 1). It. Hoggard was also admitted as.a barrister and solicitor, on the motion of Mr. J. C. Peacock. Mr. R. D. Hanlon, chemist, Molcsworth Street, left for Dunedin last evening to attend the funeral of his i'nthcr. Deceased was a well-known sergeant in the Otago polico during the stirring days of the rushes, and was retired on superannuation some years ago. Mr. A. C. Hanlon, barrister, of Dunedin, is also a son ot tho late Sergeant Hanlon. Amongst those leaving for Sydney by tho iloana on Friday, May 5, are Mr. Hwang, Chinese Consul, and Mrs. Hwang and daughter. As previously announced, Mr. Hwang is to taho up the position of Acting-Chinese Consul-Gen-eral in Australia. The Rev. H. Van Staveren has' gono for a mouth's holiday visit to Sydney and Melbourne for the benefit of his health. Among the passengers to leave for Sydney last night by the Moeraki was Dr. Deck, a missionary who works m tho Solomon Islands. Mr. T. G. Underbill and Miss M. Underbill, of Carterton, leave on Friday next on a trip to Brisbane. Mr. J. Benuotts, of Roxburgh, informs the Dunedin "Times" that it is his intention to offer himself as a candidate for tho Tuapeka seat in tho Ministerial interest at tho general .election..'. "', ' Messrs'!" C. 1 M'Arthur, Sidney Stafford, and F. Bates have been- nominated for the vacancies oil tlie Onslow Borough Council (Khandallah Ward). The election takes place on Thursday next. Dr. R. H. Thomas, and Messrs. Allan Maughan and N. Treloar, .who arrived bv tho Maitai from. San Francisco on Thursday, were passengers for Sydney by the Moeraki last night. Mr. 11. Atkinson, of Christchurch, was a passenger to Sydney by tho Moeraki yesterday.
Mr. A. H. Miles, of the firm of Murray. Roberts, and Co., left Wellington for Sydney last night. . The Museum and Library; Committee recommended at a meeting of tho Canterbury College Board of Governors held on Monday last that, on tho suggestion of Professor Scott, tho engineering scholarship of vho value of £20 per annum, tenable for five years, with boarding allowance of £25 per annum; ho awarded to Francis M. Corkill. Tho winner is an old Wellington College boy, and is a fon of Mr. Thos. Corkill, of Oriental Bay, Wellington. Mr. Thomas Frederick Martin, bar-* rister-at-law, lias been appointed chancellor of the Anglican diocese of Wellington. Mr. E, J. Felton, general manager of tho Queensland Insurance Company, is making a tour of the Dominion, accompanied by Mr. D. A. Abercronibio, of Wellington, manager for tho company in New Zealand. Mr. H. N. Holmes, the secretary of the Y.M.C.A., has received a letter from Mr. C. A. Potts, choir leader and soloist of the' Henry-Potts Mission of last year, stating that both ho and Mrs. Potts have arrived at their homo in Los Angeles, U.S.A. Mr. Potts had charge of 1 all the musical arrangements at tho great Californian Y.M.C.A. Convention last month in San Francisco. He is now conducting a sories of evangclistio meetings in the State of Idaho, in company with Mr. Hugh Smith.
An appropriation by ballot of £400 in the Johnsonville Co-operative Building Society took piace in the Rechnbito Hall, ' Johnsonville. Tho numbers drawn were 2(3 and 201. No. 26, holding three shares, took £300, and £100 was handed to No. 201. A deputation, headed by Mr. J. P. Luke, M.P., will interview the Minister tor Public. Works (the Hon. R.
