MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M.) STREET ORATOR FINED. THE CASE OF CHARLES THORPE. Charles ThorpCj charged with having obstructed tho tralfie in Boulcott Street, failed to appear. Tho police evidence stated that the defendant Was addressing a crowd, and when approached by a constable said that ho had a permit from the City Council. He then went away and returned with the permit, hut was informed that tho. privilege was subject to police control. Ho refused to "move on" when so requested, hence tho prosecution. • His Worship imposed a fine of 405., adding 9s. costs, with tho alternative of seven days' imprisonment. THEFT OF FOWLS. ' A man named John Cooper, charged with having stolen a pair of fowls, valued at 65., from one Patrick O'Callaghan, pleaded guilty, and was remanded for sentenco till May 3. ILLTREATING THEIR HORSES. Two men, J. Connor and F. Laws, were each convicted of having illtreated horses, which thoy were' for the time being in charge of. Both pleaded guilty, and wero fined £3 each, tho option being fourteen days' imprisonment. INSOBRIETY. ' Ono first-offending inebriate was convicted and discharged. Allan Steelo Ramsay, for drunkenness, was fined 205., with the usual option. Jesper Arnold Moran, for whom Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared, pleaded guilty to a breach of his prohibition order, and was fined 405., with 7s. costs, the option being a week in gaol. Ho was given seven days to find the money. A prohibition order was issued against Joseph George Wood. VARIOUS OFFENCES. For driving his motor-car without lights on Lambton Quay, Herman F. A. Wollerman was fined ss. There being, in tho opinion of his Worship, insufficient evidence to sustain the charge against F. Gormloy, of having negligently driven a motor-car in Adelaide Road, tho caso was dismissed. Mr. E. J. Fitzgibbon appeared for the defendant. J. D. Brady was fined 55., with costs totalling £1 55., for having boarded a moving car. Andrews and Lissington, represented by Mr. E. J. Fitzgibbon, were fined 55., with costs los., for 'having allowed their horses to stray. A man named James Love, charged with having used improper languago, was convicted and fined 205., with costs amounting to lis., the alternative being 48 hours in gaol. Mr. P. W. Jackson appeared for tho defendant.
