The question in dispute, so far as tho country districts was concerned, is whether preference to unionists should bo granted in respect of drivers of traction engines. After hearing evidence,, the council decided that tno claim tor preference should not bo sustained. The annual meeting of the Mastcrton Boxing Club was held this evening. Tho annual report sho.vod tho club to bo in a satisfactory financial position and to have an active membership of hftyfivc. The Waingawa Freezing Works, which have already put through 100.00U sheep for tiro reason, will bo working halftime for tho remainder of the season. For a time he was on the property of Mr. Charles Pharazyn, on the East Coast, and afterwards' with his brother (now in England) he purchased the Matahiwi estate. Tho late Mr. Holmes at one .time occupied a seat on tho Wairarapa North County Council. He had taken a great interest in acclimatisation matters, and was for years a member of the council of tho Wairarapa Acclimatisation Society. was also a director of the Wellington Moat Export | Company and of tho' Mastcrton Cooperative Dairy Company.
