At a. meeting of the Borough Council on Tuesday evening tho local branch of the Wairarapa Boxing Association were granted permission to connect the gymnasium with the high-pressure, wa'ter mains. The proposer! Debating Society were granted the use of the Council Chambers on the usual conditions. Mr. E. Smith was appointed assistant to the road overseer at a salary of Bs. per dav. The inspector reported that three building permits had been iisued, the total value being <E7GO. An explanation was received from the captain of the fire brigade regarding increased consumption of gas. The annual meeting of the committee and subscribers of the Public Library was held on Tuesday evening, Mr. W. Howard Booth presiding. It was reported that there were 120 subscribers on the books of the institution. The report and balance-sheet wore read and adopted. Mr. W. C. Buchanan, M.l'., was elected patron, Mr. W. Howard Hooth president, Mr. A. N. Burns vice-president. Committee, .Mrs. Johnston, Messrs. J. G. Moore, W. Dounard, M. D. MacGonn, 13. Tropp, and C. 11. Cormaclc. A bonus of £5 was voted to the librarian in appreciation of liis work during the year. At a meeting of the committee, held later, Mr. W. Dounard was re-elected secretary. Messrs. Cormnck, and Dounard a . reading-room committee, and Mrs. Johnston and Mr. Tropp a book committee. A meeting of the Friendly Societies' Council takes place on Friday evening to receive an application for affiliation from the Hibernian Lodge.
