ST. MARY'S HOME, KARORI.

THE ANNUAL REPORT. The • annual meeting of St. Mary's Guild will be held in tuo Diocesan Ofiicc, Jlulgrave Street, this afternoon (as advertised in smother column). The report and balance-sheet "ill be presented and addresMß will bo Riven by the licv. A. L. llansell and li. H. Hobday. The Bishop-elect of Wellington (the Rev. T. H. Sprott) will preside. All interested in the work of St. Mary's Home at Knrori aro cordially invited to be present. ..The annual report states:— During the year which has just closed there has .been steady progress, both in (he work of influencing those girls who are already in the homes as well as in gathering in those who arc in need of shelter and help. The.-increase, in accommodation has amply justified itself. Besides ranking room for more new girls, this increase has also enabled the matron to receive! occasional visits from "old girls,", and her work among these in the way of helping them, to. good situar. . tions and generally keeping them in the straight road is by no means the.least arduous part'of her difficult work. The ■guild are extremely sorry to have to report the loss of their valuable second matron just before, the close of the year. Miss Lockhart broke down in health, and was obliged to leave the home, it is feared, permanently. This breakdown was caused almost entirely by her selfsacrificing and devoted work in the home, and it is difficult to know where to find a successor who will carry out her duties with such patience and diligence and whole-hearted devotion as she did. ■ Miss Underhill was able to secure a cottage at Seatoun for "part of January, to which she took all the children for tines weeks, and the benefit-to their health, as well as their eeneral enjoyment, was very' great. The guild are grateful : to Mi.'s Underhill-for all the trouble she tool; over this outing. During- the General ■ Mission, held last spring, the Rev, -Prebendary H. .V.Stuart very kindly added to his other work by conducting a simple thri , * days' mission in the homo. His addresses were listened to with the deepest interest, and there is every reason to believe that a very real blessing has come to more than one of the, girls in consequence. Two celebrations have been held for the guild during the year; in May whan the Kev. T. H. Sprott preached, and in November when a most helpful and sympathetic address was given by the Rev. 11. W. Kinloch. The euild feel that the nresenoe of the missioners was most helpful to them in many ways, and they hope specially to. remember the wise and perorating advice given, them by the Rev. H. A. Kennedy at their annual meetiim in April. Five of the girls were confirmed at Karori Church on March 23, three from the Main Home and two from Ihe cottage. . . . ' . The health of the girls has again bean excellent in both . homes, and the conduct satisfactory. '

It will be noticed that the statement of accounts shows a very large credit balance, but ,£2OO cf .this rightly belongs to the new year's accounts, bc-intr tho annual grant .given in aid of the guild's rescue work by the Government. This grant is usually paid after the closing of the year's books, but as i , came during the month of Jlarch this year, it anpears .to unduly swell the credit balance. Without this .€2OO the euild havo only .£IG to brin? forward, but they aro thankful that their wants 'lave been sufficiently met, and durins? the year they were able to pnv ,£IOO "ff the mortgage on the Coftaje Homo. The bnildins fund no longer appears as a separate fund, as it "caused unnecessary inconvenience, but the euild hope ver'v inuch to nay off the remainder of their debt within a. year or two in order io make further---advances in their work. It is probable that.- with tho openin?7of ..new building, sites'near (lie homo, fresh developments 'in the guild's ; operations may be hecessarj-, but the Ruild have every confidence that their" Heavenly Father will lead them on to fresh work with fresh powers in the future rs ;*e has so abundantly done in the past. « At tho last meeting beld, iTrs. IVallis resigned her position as president of tlio guild,..as she wm about to leave" tor England. Her resignation was - received with great regret, for Mrs. Wallis inaugurated the work of St. Mary's Homo in 1808, and during the past thirteen years her interest and energy have never flagged, and she has watched its development from very small beginnings, to tho large institution in which the work is now carried on. The guild desires to place on record its high appreciation of the time and thought their late president has so ungrudgingly bestowed upon tho adminis! ration of the home, and passed a resolution to that effect. Subsequently the guild presented Mrs.."Wallis with an album containing an addicts and some views of both homes. ■'• Miss Goates, who lias -been a- 'niember of the guild for some years, was elected : to succeed Mrs. "Wallis as president, and Mrs. Jameson was elocied a rice-president in Miss Coates's place. . It is impossible to adequately thank all the many kind friends who have given so much help and encouragement of every kind to tho guild and to the staff at tlie home—but once more special .mention must be made of Drs. Agnes Bcnnrtt and tn a H' o l° r ifl f , l ! nren ? i l ttin e attention to the health of the girls, and also to All. HnrsthoHw for his constant readies o attend to their teeth.
