THE ZEALAND FREEZER.
J TOPS OVERSEA 3IARKET. | New .Zealand sheep farmers have evolved many, crosses (says the "Live Stock i Journal," London), but not one" is <• so ; tiie Canterbury. As far as- | - oversea' trade is concerned it tops"the' I market. This "freezer" is bred on very distinct lines. In mcst cases an Englisn Leicester ram is crossed with a Merino owe, and the ewo lambs resulting are put ! to a Border Leicester ram. The type is j sometimes further improved by introducJ ing the'finer strain of tho Southdown or i Shropshire. In such a case it is usual to ' save thie-ewes resulting from the second j cross (Border Leicester ram and English ! Leicester-Merino ewe), and put 'them to j. Southdown or - Shropshire rams. The \ lambs Make ideal freezers, possessing the j .fine points of the Southdown and the » of • their Leicester progeni- | tors. Theso lambs also., mature earlier, ) an essential qualification., for.'market'pur-' ; poses,., since they are in a fit condition ; for slaughtering at a. much earlier date than either Southdown or Shropshire I cross. The frozen carcass presents a : most attractive appearance, and does not j easily discolour like some other varieties ! of mutton raised'for export.'
