NOTES AND COMMENTS. [Bv Glf.nxoe.] WELLINGTON AUTUMN MEETING. Though (hero was only a very light shower in the city yesterday morning, matters were quite different north of Itutt, where several heavy downpours occurred during the night. Testerday morning, for the first time at this meeting, the course proper at Trentham was thrown open, and all the work was done on the outside of this track. A few spectators braved the elements, aiul congregated to watch the work which was the most interesting of the week. It was dark when the first horses (Gipsy Bell. Formby, and Dearest) set out. The I'orirua pair ran a nice halfmile, but timing them was an impossibility. .However, both seemed to movo well. Kina ran the same distance alone, and under similar conditions. Eootlc was given slow pace work,- but he proved too much of a handful for L. Wilson, anil- jumped several of the trestles. Laius beat St. Mix over six furlongs, run in lmin. 20 4-ssec. The latter is a notoriously lazv track-worker, but can always bo dependent upon .to improve when the colours arc up. The two-year-olds, Aloha (Emerson) and St;. Petersburg (Traill) ran five furlongs, the former finishing half a length in front. Sharpshooter and Madam Madcap fan a mile in a tick under lmin. 47scc. The former, who was on the inside, finished
in front, but both appeared to slow down considerably in tlifr straight. Torbello (11. Telford) was given long, strong work, but Tc Kahurangi was only sprinted. Hibstone Pippin (L. Traill) went six furlongs solus. Cutts's trio of two-year-olds, Terebinth, Avarice, and Masterpiece, ran five furlongs in lmin. 4scc., Terebinth being ahead at tho finish. Peircne was too good for Mazurka over six furlongs, run comfortably in lmin. lOsec. Great interest was taken in, tho _ appearance of Danube. Assisted by Direetoire on the. inside, he started at the outside stand, and ran once round in 2min.
SOJsjc. 'Die last lialf-milo occupied . 55sec., but, down tlic back stretch, tho pace was much faster. Yiee-Admiral , gave tho pair a dozen lengths' break, ! and did not improve 011 tliem. Danubo , pulled up badly, but the gallop will do , .him a great deal of good, as, since the ( Auckland meeting, Mason has not be».:i , able lo give him any strong, work. After 1 the St. Leger he is to be turned out, and, .• ■ next, season, will go to the stud. J -Sunburnt covered half a mile in 51sec., going very pleasingly, while Bandeira .took two scconds longer over the same distance, but had lie been allowed to move along 1.6 would have done much better. Kquitas ran the fastest gallop of the morning, viz., four furlongs in 50 3-ssec. She is a much improved mare, and Will carry a lot of public money whatever she starts in. After breakfast, My Lawyer, who docs not move well in tho soft going, ran a mile in lmin. 47soc. Sea Queen easily beat Obsono and Merl'ivonia over five furlongs, run in lmin. ■Isoc. The first-named appeared to relish her task, and finished well. .Royal Scotch alone ran' five furlongs from ;i .standing start'in lmin. 3 2-sscc. .Cheddar and Montiform ran a milo together in liuin.' *17sec. The former had all tho best of the gallop, and will strip very fit 011 Friday. . ■ Several other horses wero given light tasks. A Press Association.telegram from Blen heim, received last 'night, stated that > John anil Taft have been scratched for all engagements at the Marlborough Rac- . ing Club's autumn meeting. 111 connection . with'the Auckland Rao-- ; ing Club's winter meeting,: owners ure ' , reminded that nominations close to-mor-row for the following events:—Great Northern Hurdles,: Great Northern Steeplechase, Winter Steeplechase, Cornwall Handicap, Prince, of. Advice from Blenheim states that tho rain which has fallen there has left tho Riverlands Racecourse in capital condition. Yesterday's arrivals from tho south .wero Formless and Genius. They ' were . in charge of E. O'Donnell. . , G. Price ■ arrived from Palmerston at ■midday yesterday with Boanerges, Nylanil, Bronze, and Kilosteri. By the same train A. Shearsby, A. Neale, and J.
