MINEIiS' COMPENSATION. By Telejrapli—Press Association—Copyright Capo Town, April 25. In the Union Assembly the short Bill introduced by General Smuts (Minister for the Interior) to supersede tho Bill providing for tho compensation of miners suffering from miners' phthisis, which was read a sccond time in tho Assembly, and thc:i withdrawn, has been read a third time. [The new Bill provides for tho levying of ,£25,000 on mine-owners, with a Government subsidy of tho same amount, to provide provisional compensation. Under the Bill the Government will have power to medically examine miners in a confidential way and ascertain liability, pending a permanent Bill being introduced in 19J2.] THE LANGUAGE QUESTION. Cape Town, April 25. The education compromise has been adopted by tho Assembly. [The compromise follows generally the lines enunciated by General Botha last vear, namely—(l) Equal opportunities to' learn cither language. (2) The medium of instruction to be the mother tongue of the pupil, even if that cost tho State a little more than it would otherwise havo had to expend. (3) No compulsion.] IMMIGRANTS' RESTRICTION BILL. (Rec. April 26, 10.10 p.m.) Capo Town, April 26. In tho Union Parliament Mr. Smuts withdrew tho Immigrants' Restriction Bill, and expressed tho hope that an end would be put to passive resistance. Ho announced that «i more maturo measure would be introduced next session. Parliament has been prorogued till August. ■ «
