■ ■ MANAWATU CLUB OPENS. The Manawatu Hunt Club opened the season yesterday afternoon with a "meet" at Rangitikei Line. The weather was beautiful for the sport, which was of the best, there being a large field of followers, and a big-crowd of spectators, who thoroughly enjoyed the proceedings. The drag was laid by Messrs. Graham, Shannon, and R. Cooper, and started on the property of Mr. George Shannon, the first • check taking place on Milson's line. From hero the run crossed the properties. of Messrs. Linklater and Sinclair, the "kill" taking place at the. resilience of ; Mr. H. M'Ewan, at The . run, as has been indicated, , was a. very fine one. It was laid out and the jumps erected by Messrs. Graham Shannon, J. L. Buick, and Bruce M'Ewen. The Jlisses .M'Ewen and .Mr. H. M'Ewen entertained the field and spectators with a sumptuous afternoon tea. Air. S. 11. Lancaster, president of the club, thanked the ladies for their hospitality, and also the property-owners for placing their lands at the disposal ol' the club. Being the first hunt of the season, riders, horses, and hounds alike were a little on tho "green" side, but, notwithstanding this, there were no falls, and all tho horses fenced in very fair, style. . The now huntsman, Mr. J. Sweeney, .acquitted himself well, and, with a few more runs, ho will liavo a first-class pack. Tho field comprised 'Messrs. George Shannon (Master), on Waiata.
