WELLINGTON'S POPULATION.

CENSUS RETURNS: INCREASE 8697. Tlio population returns for Wellington and suburbs were, completed yesterday by the Rcgistraor, Mr. G. G. Hodgkins. The details are as follow, a comparative table also being supplied for 1906, the year of the last previous census:— 1911. 1806. Wellington City Onslow Borough 189 -.098 Karon' Borough l.'W ..,194 Miramar Borough 1 »'>■ 0 -5Potono Borough Hutt Borough 4,26j- 3,407 Eastbourne Borough ... 559 35s On shipboard 667 Johnsonvillc Town Dis- ; trict 929 731 Makara County 2,708 , 259 Hutt County ••• ' I,U- [ Upper Hutt Town Dis- i trict 1>050) Totals 0f,819 82,122 The actual increase for Wellington city is 5713; the increase for Wellington and suburbs 8066, and for the whole Wellington census district 8697. A few alterations in boundaries more or less affect the city and the citv and suburbs returns, but the census district figures are an .actual exact comparison. On these figures, therefore, ■Wellington is 8697 ahead of the last COIISUS. Onslow and Karori show a decrease, but the fact must be considered that Onslow handed over Wadostown, with 1037, residents. to the city, and that Karon lias also been shorn of Northland, and so loses' 1713 inhabitants. Therefore it can be seen that in every quarter of tho Wellington census district there has been an increase, and the aggregate is considered satisfactory in view of the time of depression the city passed through during the period under review. It is computed also that at least 1000 people are away from the city en route to the Coronation. It lias been the custom previously to exclude Petone, Hutt, and Eastbourne when computing the city's actual population for purposes of the comparison with other cities. But since these suburbs have now become popular . residential places, and since, also, many people would be dwelling there at least temporarily during the week ends (at the time when the census was taken) it is obviously only right to include them. The total given bv including these suburbs with the city is" 80,000. Tn 1906 Mnkara County. Hutt County, and Upper Hutt Town District wore all returned under the title of Hutt County Council.
