Muilta!. Tho annual meeting of householders took place in the schoolroom, Muritai, on Monday night. Thero was a very large attendance, the schoolroom being iillecl to overflowing. Mr. J. P. Kelly presided. The outgoing committee's report showed that during tho year tho school had bccii enlarged by an additional class-room, excellently furnished and fitted with school requisites, while tho original portion of the building had been thoroughly renovated, and brought up-to-date. A special vote of thanks was accorded to the Education Board for tho interest taken in the school, and for tho satisfactory state in which the property had been placed. The credit balance, which stood at £10 10s. lid. when tho committee took office, had increased to £35 11s. Bd., while out of special revenue received the committee had equipped the school with a treadle sewing-machine, a water-filter, several books for the school library, and one dozen framed pictures of historical subjects. Special thanks were due to tho Wellington Ferry Company for the use of Day's Bay grounds for the school picnic, and to Mr. E. G. F. Zohrab for tho gift of a valuable flag-pole. Mention was also made of tho excellent work done by the headmaster, Mr. H. Sanson, and the assistant, Miss Haslam.
After tho report had been read and discussed it was moved by Mr. Russel, and seconded by Mr. 11. A. Wright, that, as a mark of appreciation of tho excellent work done during the year, the out-going committee, viz., Messrs. Avory, Button. Chitty, Hobbs, Kelly. Ross, and Wills, should be re-elected unopposed. This linding favour with tho meeting, and all the retiring members having signified their willingness to again accept office, the motion was carried with acclamation. At a subsequent meeting, Mr. J. P. Kelly was unanimously re-elected chairman, and Mr. F. G. Chitty was elected secretary, in place of Mr. J. I). Avery, who, through pressure of business, was unable to again accept the oflice. Shannon. In spite of tho unpleasant weather there was a good attendance of householders in the school on Monday evening, wlwui the election of.the committee was held. In his annual report, tho chairman, Mr. Batchelar, stated that at the previous annual meeting the number of children on the roll was 21S, the present number being 201, the decrease being due chiefly to the opening of tho new school at Makenta. Several vacancies occurred on the committee during the period, but owing to the jjroxiniity
ol the annual goiirr.il inwting, it was considered unnecessary to fill them. During tlio past year the average attendance reached 179, and this entitled tlic school to a much-needed increase in the teaching stall". Tlio board's inspector, II r. Trmnant. who visited the school twice during the year, spoke in highly complimentary terms regarding tlio work and management of the school. The school cohort realised £14, £3 los. Gd. ol which was voted towards the. school library, the balance going to increase the subscriptions collected for the annual school picnic. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £10 3s. 9el. Y.i the hank at the end of the year. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the outgoing committee, on tlir: motion of Mr. J. .Mitchell, ,1.1'., who was voted to the chair. Mcrwood (30), Bilderbeck (23), Grimstone (22). Ohariii. Only seven householders put in a.n appearance at the animal meeting on Monday niglit. Individual members of the, outgoing committee refused .nomination, and as no other nominations wore received, the election of a committee for the year failed.. The- ex-committee felt somewhat hurt with the utterances of ouo of the members of the Education Board with reference to a deputatio.n of the committee to the board during the last year, when representations were being made for a new school. The repairs the committee were forced to admit are a great improvement upon the old style, but at the same time they feel that they .have been subjected to remarks that wore uncalled for. The board will now have- to take steps for a i'resli election. Hastings. Tho annual meeting of householder!! of the Hastings School district was held on Monday, iur. George' Land presiding. Tho annual report showed that at the present time the roll number is 763, of whom there are 36 in the secondary school. The attendance for the year was a record for the school, although the numbers were constantly decreasing in the secondary school. If tho average for the current quarter is as high as the two quarters the school will bo entitled •to another assistant. Therefore parents and guardians are strongly urged to be most particular in the regularity of their children's attendance. The committee have been much exercised in "their minds at the gradual decline in the secondary department attendance, and cannot understand the cause or why parents do not support their own high school moro loyally in preference to sending their children to Napier. The. following were appointed the School Committee for the ensuing year:—Messrs. G. Land, T. H. Stewart, A. Leipst, T. Styles, T. J. Davidson, J. E. Jones, G. Musson, C. Haivkes, J. A. Miller.
