WORK OF THE S.P.C.A.

NO AID FBOM CITY COUNCIL. The Society for the Prevention of Crueltj' to Animals met last evening, Mr. J. S. Jamieson presiding. The inspector, in his report, said that he had placed (our cases ol' overloading in the city streets before the City Council. Ho had heard from the city solicitor that it had been decided to withdraw the cases. Ho had told the council's representative that ho would not go to them again if that was all the assistance ho received. He also recalled an instance someyears back when eighteen cases had been laid before the council, out of which number only five had been proceeded with, and in these exceptions very.light fines were inflicted. The chairman pointed out the recent cases were not yet withdrawn; they were only held over by the City Council. The inspector replied that the result of the deputation to the council was that the sub-committee had recommended that tho cases be withdrawn, and had it not been for Councillor Fletcher's action and protest they would have been withdrawn. ■He only desired to show the want of sympathy tho council had with them in their work. Ho only wished tho horses could wait on the council; they would tell them some sorry tales! The inspector complained that in another case, where a horto was bad, and ho had asked the Government veterinary surgeon, who happened to be near, to inspect it, he had been met with a refusal. Indignation was expressed by members of the society, and it , was decided to report the matter to tho Department.' Contributions to the fund were received as follow:—Misses Rowley and Malcolm, £1 Is. each;, Dr. A. Martin, Messrs. J. J. Reich, Gollin and Co., ■Wardell Bros., J. J.
