DR. JOWETT'S FUTURE.
FAREWELL SERMON AT OARR'S LANE:" •'■■■ Dr. Jowott closed his ministry at Urr s Lane Church, Birmingham, on Sunday March.s. So great was the anxiety to gam admittance to the church that fully an hour before the servico lengthy queues stretched away from the entrance doors, and eventually many hundreds of disappointed people were turned away. With a •quietness which bespoke suppressed emotion, Dr. Jowett opened the service, and every ear was strained as,, in a voice .little .above a whisper, he prefaced aJtriking'-'sermon' with a sympathetic allusion to what "'he termed "a very solemn-arid awe-inspir-ing occasion." "Memory," he pursued, is very busy just now; sometimes sho lays very troublesome loads upon my mind; but she also-brings treasures more precious than rubiesi''.-: "•The preacher's voice faded into Jicss, and then ho proceeded; "'"I look back to-day upon work that is only very partially accomplished; The. way is littered with failures,'both of life and service, but here and there are cheering achievements. I came to Carr's Lane in' much fear and trembling, but I brought a gospel that I proved. "How vividly 1 remember the Sunday morning when my ministry began— every nerve in my body was stretched and strained, my soul was the haunting place of countless timidities and fears but I had no doubt- about tho 'go'spei I camp to preach", and how the ministry thus began is closing, and I am face to face with another great change.' I am timid enough about myself, but I have no timidity about my gospel. "With that gospel, of the love of God, I finish my work here, and with the same gospel I shall begin, my work in, New York."
