RECORD PRIZE MONEY.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, April 24. Tlio prize money distributed at the Ramhviek autumn meeting amounted to £20,101—a record for Australia. NOTES AND COMMENTS, [By Glencoe.] Heavy rain fell at Traitliam yester* day morning and prevented any fast work being done. The teams controlled by Trainers Prosser, Cutts, Quinliyan, Lowe, Ayres, Goodman, and Davier were allotted steady pacing. Acceptances for tbo first day's events at tbe Marlborough Kacing Club's meet' iiiß are duo oil I'riday next.
Whilst being put on the boat at Lyi< telton, the Great Autumn Handicap winner, Cheddar, became frightened, and one of his hind legs came into contact-, with the band truck. With the exceptibn of a slight scraping, however, the Mcrriwoe gelding sustained no harm.
Miss Advanco was offered for sale at , auction on Thursday last, but the bidding did not reach the reserve.
The Stepniak filly, Aphaea, has bee< sold by Messrs. Stead Brothers, and, ail Irentham, she will carry the colours of Mr. S. Luttroll. She is still to. to trained by J. Franks at. Yaldhurst.
Orton and Directoire, in chargo of P. Mason, reached Trentham on Saturday night, after their unsuccessful trip to Ellcrslic. The former colt "went righi off" at Auckland, and his defeat in the Champagne Stakes was quite expected by track watchers.
Mon Ami and Rongamau will be tho' only representatives from C. Pritcbard's stable racing at Trentham. They wil) bo railed on tho morning of the race, and will bo brought home tho same evening. Tho black mare will be ridden by A..M'Mullen, and J. Buchanan wil. , probably have the mount on Rongomau. Mr. W. Gardiner, of Oarnaru, is the now owner of Penates. The price paid is reported as £350. Some twelve months ago Mr. Gardiner made an unsuccessful effort to purchase Penates. Turna was taken across to Trentham yesterday to join the other members of the Porirua team. Mulga Bill was amongst the track workers at Trentham yesterday. Ho is in charge of his owner, Mr. T. F. Godda rd. The Highden apprentice, J. M'Lean. will ride Aloha in the Nursery Handicap on Friday. It is stated that there is a probability of tlio Auckland horso Grenadier making another trip to Australia shortly. Eurus, who scored in 1906, is the only previous winner of tho AVanganui Steeplechase entered in this year's race. The Soult gelding Shuja is working satisfactorily at, Fordell, and, if ha keeps sound, it is his owner's intention , to give him a run at Wanganui next month. If the cable is correct, Trafalgar's time in the A.J.C. Plate, viz., smin. 22Jscc, is a second better than the previous Australasian record for tho same distance. In 1896 Wallacp and Quiver dead-heated in the Champion Stakes at Flomington in smin. 23} sec, and this time stood as a record till Saturday. Bibbenluke, who acted as pacemaker for Trafalgar, is responsible for the fast time. Taken all round the acceptances for the first day's events at the Wellington Racing Club's meeting must be considered good. Apparently none of the Auckland horses are to come to Troiitlia'm, but the competitors will include a strong contingent from tho south. While the absence of Los Angeles from the Thompson Handicap field is regrettable, there are still left in the. raco sr.cli notable southern performers as Sharpshooter, Vice-Admiral, and My Lawyer,, while Obsono remains in tho Railway Handicap. Tho remaining candidates include- tho best,to.be found in our own part of the Dominion. The. pony Maika was sold in Auck- ■ kind last week for 22 guineas. From. Auckland comes word of tho death of the two-year-old filly Tranquil (Hiorarch-Peace), who raced several times in the colours of Mr. W. Lang. As Cullinan has not been accepted fof in either of tbo handicap events in which ho was engaged on the first day, of the Trentham fixture he will apparently not be brought ■io tho meeting. This would not be surprising in view of his disappointing form at Ellerslie. FIXTURES. April 26 and 29—Avondale J.C. Autumn. April 20 aud 27—Reefton J.C. Autumn. April 28 and 29—Wellington R.C.
