---------------|---------------- EVENT ON KIMBOLTON ROAD. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, April 22. Mr. Fantham, a representative of the Wanganui Brewery Company, was admitted to a private hospital in Palmerston last evening, suffering with a broken, leg. It appears that he was riding a motor cycle along the Kimbolton Road when, in coming down a slight declivity, the driver of a trap failed to give him room to pass, with the, result that he was forced so far on to the side of the road that the cycle capsized, with the result stated. The sufferer was brought to Palmerston by Mr. Jacob in his motorcar.

SLUDGE IN in XING SHAFT. COMRADE'S NOBLE ACTION. (By Telegraph-Press Association.) Invercai'cill, April 23. At (ho inquest at Romulhill on the bodies of Joseph Bates and Frank Smith, killed through Hie rising of sludge in a mining shaft, the jury returned the following verdict:—"That Joseph Bates and P. Smith met their deaths as tho result of drowning caused by the blocking of the suction pipe, and that there was no blame attachable to anyone." They wished also (o place on record their sense of Smith's nobln conduct in giving his life to save his mate. The following rider was added:—"That no work in sink-j ing a second lift should take place at night in dangerous ground." FALL ON REVOLVING BELT. Ashburton, April 22. James Stephens, a storekeeper at Staveley, and for thirty-five years a resident of that district, met his death in a very sad manner last night. He was found early this morning in his garden, quite dead, and black and blue with bruises, near a water wheel which generates electricity in his house. It is surmised that last night ho caught his foot in a rut, and falling against the revolving belt was entangled therein, and beaten to death. GUNSHOT WOUND. Yesterday afternoon a voting man. William li. Knigcr, liviii? at 11 Belfast Street, a driver, was brought to the Wellington Hospital suffering from a gunshot wound in one of his knees. The injury was sustained while Kruger was out shooting among the Karori hills. ■ No details of how tho accident occurred ivero available last evening, but it was staled tho injury was a rather severe one.
