Acceptances for the first day's events at the- Marlborough Racing Club's meeting are due on Friday next. The aged .gelding South Star broke n leg at Waipawa recently, and had to be destroyed. It is understood that Mr. R. W. Paterson has disposed of Penates to a South Island owner, but the. price has not transpired. At the present time Penates is in charge of Obsouo's trainer at Kiccarton. Ribstonc Pippin is at Trentham, bnt will not start there, as his owner scratched him last week for all engagements. T. Quinlivan arrived at Trentham from Riccarton on Saturday. lie has in his charge Cheddar, Royal Scotch, mid Montiform. The Porirua trainer, J. 11. Cults arrived from Eiccarton \y.ith Madam Madcap, Masterpiece, Sharpshooter, Avarice, anil Terebinth. As the steamer did not reach Wellington until a couple of hours later than usual, the horses could not be railed to the racecourse until the afternoon. The Maori was late in leaving Lytlelton owing to a breakdown of the southern express train,
G. Price is expected to reach Trentham from Avvapuni nn Wednesday with Kilotteri, Nylaud, Boancrgss, and Bronze. Other Auapiini horses that will probably lirrivn on the same day are Allurement. Floater, and Vibration. ObsoiH) and My Lawyer are both snid to be coming from the south to race at Trcnthain. lint it is reported that when the acceptances for the Thompson Handicap are published to-night, the list will not include t!ic name of Los Angeles. 3fad;un Madcap and Masterpiece will probably both start in the North Island Challenge! Stakes on Friday next. In the Thompson Handicap Sir Gco. Clifford's colours will no doubt bo carried by Sharpshooter. From nil accounts the New Zealand St. Leger Stake.; on Saturday will not include more than three starters. Danube, it is Siiid, is lame, and will nrobalily not be brought north. Xilhsdalo'is still running in Iho paddock at Eiccarton, and King Soult will not be brought from Auckland—at least, so says repo'rt. PatersoD. wh.o went south to seo Penates race e& the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting, returned to AVollington by the Maori yesterday. The crack two-year-old Antagonist will, not. race again this season, but, oil going well, ho will bo competing in the principal three-year-old events next spring. Weights for the first day's events at the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's meeting are due on May 1. The nominations received ' for all events at tho meeting are above the average. Two youngsters by Signalman arc now in work in local stables. A. Goodman has ono at Trentham, and X. Cotton has another at the Hutt. Capital entries' have been received for Iho winter meeting of the AVanganui Jockoy Chili, and the class of horses engaged in the cross-country events is very good.' Weights for tho first day's events are not duo until May G, Many of those who have been present at recent race meetings predict that the. totalisator accommodation at Trentham will not be sufficient for this week's meeting. If this proves to bo tho caso it will be regrettable, for, apart from tho revenue which the club will lose, there is also to be considered the disappointment that will bo felt by tho public, who are now no longer at liberty to invest their sovereigns with tho bookmakers. If the, club decided to erect some additional totalisator accommodation before Friday next, no doubt every pound spent in this direction would mean a return of «£2 at tho mooting.
