ELECTION NOTICES. TO-NIGHT! TO-NIGHT! IN THE NEW CENTURY HALL (Kent Terrace), mHE LABOUR CANDIDATES SPEAK 1 ■ On Why Trade is Dull-Houses to Let Everywhere—and the Steamers to Australia Crowded 'i VITAL QUESTIONS FOR ALL, Touching VALUES, RATES, RENTS, and TRADE. THE PROGRESS OF AYELLINGTON'S FOET AND CITY. A NEW ASPECT oF LOCAL GOVERNMENT. Meeting Opens 8 p.m. Judge the Labour men not from rumour (often a lying jade), but by hearing for yourselves. J. W. KAY, Secretary N.Z. Labour Party. HENRY BODLEY'S CANDIDATURE. A S my first dealt with the Higher ■£*- Criticism so my second must treat tho Lower Cult, viz., the common detail. I don't mind admitting that I hung back for inspiration from 35 other sources, but what a chance was there? Anyhow, I am satisfied that Constable Street may stay where it is, the Kilbirnie Tunnel still point to Signal Hill, and that the Grant Road Quarry is not a bad hunt for stone. Nevertheless, if any or all were vetoed on technical points, I would shudder at sight of a punctuation mark in official dicta, tho vortex would seem so irresistible. But there was one candidate who gave me food for thought. He proffered half a dozen propositions, all unmistakably speculative entanglements of finance, while at the same time vowing HE WOULD OPPOSE ANY PBOJECT CALCULATED TO INCREASE THE RATES. Of course, I want to get in, but, if inconsistency is the road, Good-bye. A City formerly meant tho site of a Cathedral, the centre of a Diocese. Now it stands for any place which promises the power to interfere with other people's business, and applies to any such inhabited area not actually urban, the country being left largely and contemptuously outside the pale of pamperdom. Municipalities multiply while individuals decay. Tvithin the city we havo tho home, but now no longer sacred, for the inspector may enter at will, supervise the mother tending her babe, watch the cooking of the morning chop, and introdhce his friend the .reporter to. print it. Then, of course, tho business, portion, but it is too soon to talk of that, for business has no business there.. The interspaces left. for civic activity are, for'the most part; streets .'with, th'e appurtenances thereof, -but,- as . there f is no high falutin about thorn, the loss said soonest mended.' : '•■',.■ ■' ' ' Now I am of opinion that business is. the golden goose 1 which lays tho civic egg. What! Goose? Yes, more.often than not.. Therefore, as no goose means no. dinner; so no business makes for what could be termed a city. " ' . These arguments will make unwilling tenants for the- vacant'lots in the- top stories of blatant Socialism, but taken as necessary pills* might oure their unnecessary ailments, or ailments, which •would be unnecessary were their thinking less selfish. ' .'. There is ample scope for ' intelligent progress while doing the works they know, without leaping in the dark at others they know nothing about. . I am. etc.. HENRY BODLEY. 207 Grant Road, ..' ■ 24th April, 1911. TO THE ELECTORS'OF THE CITY.' T ADIES.
