NEW SEWING MACHINE.

THE STANDARD.CENTRAL NEEDLE. An invention that will prove a boon to all women who sew has recently been brought to AVellington, and is to be found at tho premises of F. J. W. Fear, machine agent and engineer, AVillis Street. There are few women' who have made up their minds to sit down to some hours' sewing who liavo not complained, after a while', of a feeling of strain in the side, and, after a time, of outright pain, tho reason being that all the time they are sowing they arc leaning over and bending to the" right in an entirely unnatural attitude. For this reason many physicians have condemned many ordinary types of sewing machine as being a cause,of nervous and bodily disorders. It is frequently impossible to sit upright, for the needle is several inches away to the left of tho middle line of the'body, and, of course, in order to guide tho sewing, and to bring the eyes and hands within manageable distance of the needle, tho operator has to sit with a twist to the left. Backaches, headaches, indigestion, and fatigue are some of the disorders that arise, from this.

' AVi'tlftKo" .'.'Standard' Central Needle," 1 no strain is caused, for tho needlo has been brought to the very centre cf the machine, in a lino with tho eyes, and tho middle lino of the body, directly over the treadle. Even when threading the needle all that has to be dono is to bond forward, and then sit upright, and go on with tho sewing in a natural and easy position. Long ago women who worked in large facto:'.;•; were given "Central Needle" machines to sew with, but the home sewers have had to wait until quite recently for this protective machine,, the "Standard" being tho first of the kind to be brought into the home. Several medical men have examined it carefully, and Imvo expressed themselves very favourably regarding it. Another advantage that it has .'s the rotary shuttle, by which work can lo dono in a much quicker time, since it runs more quietly and easily than ar.y other kind of shuttle, making IVo stitches to 100 made by others. A

stitch is made at each revolution, whereas the oscillating or vibrating shuttle travels eight inches, and starts and stops twice to each stitch. Less footwork is needed also. Nor aro the pensions altered by change of speed, size of the thread used, thickness of the material, or length of tho stitch. "When the machine is dono with for the day, the head can bo lowered into the cabinet by automatic lifting mechanism, skilfully adapted to the central needle idea, and, when • the cabinet is closed, no dust can find its way in. All sorts of contrivances have been brought into being to save space and add convenience. . On tho inside of one of tho closing doors aro spools'on steel pins, pin cushion, weils for needles, compartments for ruWev, tucker, quilter, and all other requisites, whilo at the side is a drawer for dusters, oil, and other needful things. The appearance of tho machine is remarkably fine, its woodwork being cither of walnut or golden oak. The Standard Sewing Machine Company give it a life-time guarantee.
