(From Our Special Correspondents.) • 9 OTAKI. A proposal was' mado some timo ago to erect a cheese 'factory in this district, and a comuiitteo was set up to go into details. They did so, and convened a meeting for Thursday night, the purpose of the meeting being to place full data before farmers interested. _ Tho attendance, however, was disappointing, only half-a-dozen attending, and tho meeting was therefore adjourned. Tho intention is to hold another meeting at u futuro date. Several friends of the Natives have, presented a valuable set of curtains and drapings for the Maori Church. Championship matches in connection with the Horowhenua Rugby Union will commence heio on May 13. There promises to bb a dearth of suitable referees, and a similar trouble to that experienced in previous seasons is possible A special meeting of tho Horowhenua County Council takes place- to-morrow, when.the estimates, will be under consideration, rates for tho current year struck, and general business transacted. LEVIN. Tho Public Trustee has written to the Levin Borough Council, enclosing a statement of account of tho Levin Council sinking fund for the year ended March 31. This shows, that the sinking fund on the £18,000 waterworks loan now stands at £167 93. 9d. Tho Public Trustee allows a rate of 4 per cent, on tho amount paid by the council . and by the Government. On this particular loan tho Government pays half the sinking fund. Tho Mayor (Mr. B. R. Gardener; will givo an address on municipal affairs in the Century Hall early next week. nominated. After some vigorous canvassing, the required number of councillors (nine) wore forthcoming. The now members are Messrs. J. H. Richardson, J. D. C. Crewe, and 1. W. Mills. Mr. A'. M'Farlaue, chairman of the Ballance Dairy Company, has been nominated for one of tho two Wairarapa seats on tho Wellington Harbour Board. . To a communication from tho secretary of the Pithiatua Chamber of Commerco to tho* District Traffic Manager of tho New Zealand Railways, asking what altera! ions, if any, had been mado 'in reference to tho goods traffic, between Wellington and Pahiatua, and what steps, if any, had been taken to improve tho service between those places, a reply has been received to the effect that the manager was not aware that the arrangement for conveying goods between Wellington and Pahiatua required improving, and that no alterations had been made of late.
