NOTES AND COMMENTS.
[By Glexcoe.j The bay mare, Happy New Year, has been leased by ]~ Freeth to Rangi Kerchoma, and will in future be trained by L. Carrick at Hastings. Stamp duty, to the amount of £111 lls. 2d., is payablo by tho Wairarapa Kaeing Club in connection with its recent meeting- . Winchester was heavily backed on both days at Feilding, where two failures were recorded against him. In his first attempt his rider took a lot out of him in trying to keep him behind, and, in addition to this, Ho covered more ground than anything else in the race. The result was that he was doing his best when acting as pilot half a mile from home, and, with an additional furlong gone, Xavier had him beaten. In tho Jvimbolton Hurdles, he was in charge for the major portion of (he journey, and certaiuly seemed to go more kindly when allowed to sail along in front. l3ut tha result was no better, for ho was beaten by Jlarton at the finish. Such a (caraway customer as tho St. Crispin gelding will always be better suited over a twelve furlong course, though it must be admitted that A. Attwood has worked a big improvement in him since Christmas, when he first faced the starter. Prior to the Patea meeting, Valentino defeated Clemora in a gallop, and the St. Paul gelding was heavily backed for the big handicap at tho meeting named, but he could only run third to Ht. Lnmsden and Jargon'. J.ater, he was again saddled up, but with no belter result. On the .simo evening he was railed to Wnngnnui, and taken on to Feilding next morning, whero he failed in the HackWelter Handicap, which was wen by Cuik. Probably the racing and travelling were too much for the little fellow, but. his owner fully expeclE him to rim up to his trial at Hawcra next month.
Judging: by his Riccnrton displays, where the conditions were entirely suitable it s-eems as if Penates is now "a lisht of of her days." He was prominent in the early portion of both Iris races, but finished" well back, and. next season, we may expect, to find him retired to tha stud. It is stated that the price given for Big Blast was 300 guineas, and net 200 guineas as published. Next day he was made favourite in the Open Welter, over a seven-furlong course, but he was ono of the last to finish, and, at no portion of (he race, was he dangerous. As the end of (ho fijt season is approaching, there docs not sr.Qta to be much hone for the hav colt.
