Frank Willis (J. 1 B, Speed; C. Girdle- . '.stone, L. Meo). ' ~ .. For Karori. Nominations of candidates for the position of Mayor and councillors in the. Borough of Karori close- at.iioon to-day. Mr. C. Cathio has .been nominated as Mayor. For the council, tho only nomination received up to yesterday afternoon was that of Wra.Gco. Bradnock (Henry Cook and Wm. Craig); MR. J. FULLER, JUN., AT . . BROOKLYN. . Owing to the large attendance of electors at Brooklyn last evening, Mr. John Fuller, jun. , , who is standing for the: City Council, gavo an address in tho ''open," tho room- engaged being found all too small. Mr. Fuller spoke half ah hour, and was-accorded an enthusiastic reception. He emphasised the fact that ho , believed in tho principle (as found practical in his own business) of encouraging local industries where the price,. was 'within reasonable distance of that of , the imported article. Ho considered that tho City Council should lead the. way in upholding this principlo wherever practicable! Ho considered that, when the City Council received increased rentals'by virtue of the city's land endowments, the money should be devoted.. to the extension of the tram service, as the success of any modern city depended on convenient and cheap transit for its- suburban residents. . MIRAMAR MAYORALTY. ADDRESS BY MR. BEODIE. Mr. J. Brodie, Mayor of Miraniar, who is again standing for the Mayoralty of tho suburb, addressed a fairly well-attended meeting of electors last evening. . The candidate claimed that- he had conscientiously carried out his duties. When he took office the reduction of rates, as far, as. possible, and tho Rreatest benefit for the residents from- the revenue, were his >.ims, and they had been his aim throughput. . When he came to the chair things were in a deplorable state, twothirds of the houses- were empty, -and there was friction concerning the tram service. The' people- who were standing by waiting for unearned increment, would certainly reap' a harvest soon, for tho suburb was going to prosper. The reason why ho advocated penny fares tind frequent service by the trams was that the : absentee ■ ratepayers should bejar their share of any 'loss:oh the service along with the residents. The tram service depended on the coming election. It had been said that, the finances of tho borough wero in a bad state. When he took office there was a credit balance of and a reduction of rates of Id.' had been mooted. It had been pooh-poohed, but, this year, there was a credit balance of .£1250, and tho new council would bo ablo to make further reduction in rates of id. For a small consideration they had.erected creditable bathing sheds on the beaches, and if this policy was pursued, it would bo tho means of bencfitinK the train service. He had been. charged witi neglecting'the roads—neglect of the people on the Miramar flats, but tho reason, was that, within about four months, water pipes were to be laid, and, therefore, .it' would- be useless to repair the streets it the meantime. It hlid been said that the '.loading policy of the past was an extravagant one. Some years ago they had gone in for a loan of .£21,000. wlvich was included in tho water and drainage loan. At that time roading was costing ,£2OOO a year (roughly). The loan was a policy of economy, becauso.it reduced the'cost by doing away, of considerable patching. The kerbing and channelling, which had been carped about for two years by one or two councillors as extravagance, was . necosf-ary work. It had also been said that money had been lavishly squandered in 'one particular portion of-the district,; but that was absolutely incorrect. ' Ho "quoted figures which ho said showed 'that the ,£21,000 loan for streets and roads had been fairly distributed.

It.had been said by some that Miramar had got past tho stago of a' bush township, but, if'some'people had held the reins, it would not yet have been past the stage of a Maori pa. As to the loss on. the tramways, he had once stated to a reporter that the losa was between .£I4OO and .£ISOO. Someone else had immediately said that it was over .£4OOO. . .The; result ,of,ithe tramway investigation was that>,the. icouncil was unanimous that the, loss, after tunnel ami other charges were allowed for, was approximately .£2200. This year tho loss was £1925. It might ba snid that they were giving the Gas Company too much assistance, but that was not so. It would bring work to the borough, and other things in its train. Respecting tho King's Road matter, it had been said that the prccellure was illegal. That was not the point at all. The point was the merit or tho demerits of reducing the width of the road. The solicitors would deal with the legal : aspect. But while on the point of legality,, a certain decision of the council could not bn confirmed owing to portion of the council running away. If the King's Eoad was reduced to sixty-six feet, they would have another road of eightyeight fc3t in its place on t.he waterfront. Sixty-six feet was wide enough, nnrt narrowing it would save the borough a considerable amount of money. In reply to a question, he said that ho had always had amalgamation with the city in view. When the ratepayers thought the time wns ripe they should ask for it. It wns hot time yet.
