JOTTINGS FROM WANGANUI.
(By Telcgraph.-SDCcial CorrosDondenU Wanganui, April 19. This morning his Excellency the Governor visited the Hospital, nud then proceeded to Castleeliff. where he inspected tno harbour works. The rest of the morning was snent in a drive round the town. His Excellency left by the midday train en route for Auckland. Nominations were taken to-day for the. by-Dlectkn in connection with 'the Gonville Town Board, Messrs. .T. Bowator and Samuel Smith being nominated. Nominations for the Mayoralty aud council of Wanganui, and for the Harbour Board will be taken to-morrow. The latter election promises to bo fairly intercstinfj, there being so far seven candidates announced for six town seats, five fpr Waitotara County (two scats), and three for Wanganui County (two seats). Xhe campaign, however, lias been less lively than might have been v expected, i The sitting members of the board, after announcing their policy, havo refused to bo drawn by the efforts of the supporters of a "harbour in town" scheme.
Soundings taken on the bar by the pilot to-day show that the recently-report-ed working depth of 10 feet is being maintained.
Another branch of the Beautifying Society was'formed last evening at Castlccliff. The meeting decided to interview the Harbour Board, which owns all the sea frontage at the seaside suburb, and ask that body to set aside a portion of the- beach for.beautifying purposes.
