MASTERTON NOTES.
(From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, April 19. ■' The annual (meeting of tne Masterton Horticultural and luuuscrial bociety is to be held this evening. An interesting discussion is promised upon a; motion oi which notice has been given by ilr. l), Uaselberg, concerning the ■ dehnition oi '•amateur' , and "professional. The annual meeting of the Wairarapa Ladies' Hockey Association was held last evening. The annual report and balancesheet, showing-a credit of i; 7 Us. /d., were adopted. A letter was received, from ■thß'isew Zealand Ladiesi Hockey Association; stating that .the next tournament would be held in Wellington, a date to be advised later. Mr. V. C. liuchanan, M.l'., wris elected patron of the association, and Mr. J.U. Hue president. A large number of vice-presidents were , also elected Mr: It. Hatch was elected secretary and treasurer, and the following Management Committee was set up:—Misses K. O'Learv, Z. Humphries, and 0. Richards, and Messrs. H. Miller and 1. Morgan. Mrs. Humphries, of Greytown, was elected vice-president of the New Zealand Association, and Mr. J. D. M. M'lntyre delegate. May 11 was iixed as the date tor/ the opening of the season. The fixtures for the season will lie drawn up at a meeting of the Management Committee, to be held'at Carterton on May i. It was decided to have' the championship cup inscribed at the cost of the association. It was resolved that the Selection Committee be composed, of two representatives from each end of the district. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. Humphries, of Greytown, she having accompanied the association team to Nelson.
Tho census just taken shows the population of Lansdownc, the suburb of Masterton, to bo 7.43. That is an increase of ROO per cent./on the population of five years.ago. . Members of the St. John Ambulance Nursing Division .will shortly be called together to arrange classes for first aid and homo nursing during the winter months. A number of applications nave already been made. Mr. Quinnell, M.E.C.V.S., of. "Wellington, lias offered, to give instruction in veterinary science under the auspices of the Masterton Technical School. Should sufficient inducement offer, the managers of the school have resolved to establish a class. ■ The totara telephone posts which have done duty for the Masterton telephone system since its institution aro being replaced by ivonbtu'k. " An Ambulance Saturday is to be held at Masterton on May 6, under the auspices of the St. John Ambulance Brigade. Entries are now, being received for the root crop competition in connection with the Masterton. A. and P. Association. A cold "snap" has been experienced ill tho Wnirarapa during the last two days. The rain has freshened up the pastures considerably, and there'was a distinctly improved tone at the stock sale at Solway to-day. The diamond .moth is doing considerable damage to the turnip and swede crops in the Masterton district. \t the annual meeting of tho Masterton Collie Club, Mr. H. H. Beetham was elected president and Mr. G. E. Sykes secretary. A strong committee was set up to arrange for the dog trials to be held on May "25, 26, and 27. A comprehensive prize-list was arranged, and. as-there is no chance of the dates clashing with those of other clubs, a record meeting is anticipated. The AVairarapa Hunt season is to be opened with a run with the hounds tomorrow. '
