LOCAL ELECTIONS.
CANDIDATES' SPEECHES. MR. HUNT AT ROSENEATH. Mr. A. Leigh Hunt addressed a nicelinf of about forty electors in the Roteneath Schoolroom last evening, Mr. W. Ward presiding. The candidate received throughout an attentive hearing, and his address, at intervals, was enthusiastic-ally: applauded. To a great extent Mr. Hunt spoke upon Iho iines of his recent address at Wadcslown. Ho opined that Iho .Tramway Department needed a thorough overhauling. Tramways ill other centres carried their passengers in comfort, and showed substantial surpluses. Here over-crowding was the rule, ""'I yet the net financial results were not fjiustactory. More than JESOO a year should bo set aside for the extinction of mo old horse tramway loan. In fact, tlip indebtedness should have been wiped o« withm three years from the time when Uio. present tramways were established. l\vi nt Sili<l he -would only favour the establishment of municipal markets if > no people beforehand amply demonstrate crt ihat they would patronise them. The «Rht course would be to start with' a fish, market. If this venture proved a success, (he council would be justified in cxtendimrthc scope of the markets. If Fleeted, Mr. Hunt stated, he would urge tho immediate completion of tho drainage systems in Kolbnnie, Hataitai, Wades, town, jind Northland. The Te Aro railWay station should be developed, so that road traflic in the adjoining districts might bo reduced. This was a matter winch the City Council should press on the. attention of the Government. The establishment of an,art gallery worthy of the city, the.abatement of the smoke nuisance,. and tho setting aside of a special area for offensive trades were other matters upon which Mr. Hunt spoke-at some length. Tho council, be said, should deal with nuisances of the nature mentioned in such a way as not to unduly harass trade. . The candidate' strongly resented State encroachment in the domain of municipal affairs, and instanced tho Tramway Bill, passed last year, as an objectionable interference with municipalities. Mr. Ifunt approved thf action of Parliament iiv giving municipals ties power to insist on reasonable frontpage areas being given to .building allot ments in residential areas, and declared himself strongly in favour of the estab' lishnient of a municipal Superannuation, scheme. At the conclusion of his address, the candidate, on the motion of Professor Kirk, was unanimously accorded a vot<r of thanks. MR. FULLER, AT WADESTOWN. Mr. John Fuller, jmir!, a candidate fot municipal honours, was well received at Wadestown last evening, about thirty-five electors, including many ladies, being present, llr. Fuller's address, which lasted soino twenty minuies, waif punctuated with lond applause, and the'meeting generally was most enthusiastic, Mr. Fuller said ho was averse to candidates making promises, as iii tho past: so few of them had been fulfilled; and as he was a man of "action," and not "words," be preferred to bo modest as regards "promises." Mr. Fuller concluded his remarks by saying that he thought it was necessary to elect new councillors if only to spur the older councillors to look to their laurels, in endeavouring to improve their past excellent records.
