THE CHANGE OF THE SEASON.
FIRST AUTUMN SNAP. Yosterdny there came the first uumielakable indicntions of the approach,of winter. The air had a snap in it, and in the evening one realised suddenly that the nights were drawing in. Here in the colonies, where most ol the native bush and shrubbery- is evergreen, and where, pinos comprise the majority nf the imported trees, we do not. havo the rick autumn tints and the falling, leaves to remind us that the bright summer days are leaving us. Our seasons come and (ja with less obvious changes in the face of nature. Here also wo arc less orthodox, even in our cities, in the matrcr of dress than in the Old World. Here straw hats do not. change in one day, as if by magic, to sombre felts and "bowlers," and a man is uot looked at with astonishment should he prolong hie simmer wear into the autumn, if ho pleases. With ladies, perhaps, custom is a little more exacting, though even ladies enjoy considerably more liberty in. the limits of the seasons than do their sisters in the far-away lands of conventions and traditions. However, the months have now sped well on into the autumn, and had this land swallows about its cities and by-ways, we might expect just about now to tee them gathering in. groups on the houses and on the telegraph wires in preparation for their flight to warmer climes.
