' . —9 : . OUTING'TO.'SOMES ISLAND. Although the weather was not at all inviting yesterday, about 30{) people journeyed; :■ across ; -.tho. -water 4 to Somes . Inland;'where- the "Port Nicholson ' Yachi Club held a picnic. The steamor Pilot, which was chartered by the club, was a full ship when she left the wharf, and tho yachts had ful crews. During the day .a programme of sports was got oil', and lunch and afternoon tea wero provided by tho club. The results of the variois events ara as follow:— 100 yds. Running Race. First prize, aneroid barometer; second prize, tobacco pouch.—E. Gracey,_ 1; E. Haslam, 2. 'l'ug-o'-war for .-Ward Shield. Open for teams from Ist, 2nd, and 3rd class yachts. —First-class yachts, .1; third-class, 2. 50yds. Wheelbarrow Eacc. Cole and C. Salmon, 2. After the picnic the prizes were presented, and . tho yachts returned home about 6 o'clock. YACHTS IN A "BLOW." THE RIP IN A SOUTHEELY. Wet and shivering were, the crews of the yachts that finished in tho Cruising Club's race from Port Underwood. Some of the yachtsmen who took part in this raco stated that the trip was far more trying than was the case in the last oceaii race. "Tho rip at Sinclair Hfead was enormous, " stated one sport, nnd the seas just "plompcd" aboard with uncomfortable frequency. Tho yachts left Port Underwood in the following order:— Ngaira, 8 a.m.; Ivotiri. 8.35 a.m.; Rhona, and White Heather, 9.20 a.m. All the boats carried full sail, and'the sea was very lumpy. When nearing Sinclair Head the Heather overtook Ngaira, but Rhona hung on a little way in the zear. Ivotiri was then well in the lead. Just before getting into the rip Rhonn put about, andi started back for Port Underwood. Ivotiri crossed the finishing line first at 3 p.m., with Heather next, at 3.13 p.m. (5 hours 58 minutes), and Ngaira at 3.2 C p.m. Ivotiri takes first place, with Heather second, and Ngaira third. A lifebuoy with the name' "White Heather" painted on was washed overboard from tho yacht on the return trip. She left Wellington on Saturday evening last, and arrived at Port Underivood at 7 a.m. on Sunday. ,In one of the big sheds at Port Underwood, on Saturday about fifty yachtsmen were entertained at a reception by Mr. Jackson. The catering was done by Mr. Godber, of Wellington, and a very enjoyable time was spent. Mr. and Mrs. Guard extended a very kindly hospitality to tho yachtsmen, nnd the party wns one to bo remembered by those present. Tho Patronus left Port Underwood for Wellington at 6 a.m. yesterday, but put back as the sea was too rough for her. 'The Mahinn. and Waitangi arrived back yesterday afternoon, and reported a very rough trip across. Mr. Jackson's launch Taniwha, which returned-yesterday, mndo an exceedinprly fast passage across, taking two minute's short of five hours. Two or three ladies were on the launch, and nuito - enjoyed tho trip.
