(By Tdlccrtbh:—Special Correspondent.) Carterton, April 17. Sea Qunen (who ivns reserved for tha lutumu Handicap), Leahora, and Puiainu were withdrawn from the lirst race, n which Rill was made a decided favourte. Tho start was an indifferent one, Simplex being left behind a few lengths. 3rackcn, whose connections fancied him itrongly, led the field, followed closely jy British Maid and Merrie Frank in hat order. Entering the straight British tfaid displaced Bracken, and won by a ;ood length, with something, in hand. Bracken had to be ridden hard to beat Hcrrio Frank. Splash was fourth, Rill ifth, and Simplex last all the way. Teir starters contested tho Moroa Hack handicap, in -which Vito was a much beter favourite than Lady Volley. Black leef, who carried 141b. ovor-weight, occu>ied a good position throughout the race, ind, coming, away at the distance, won ■asily by nearly half a length. Kohuwtiki led tho field to the straight, and hen. closed down. Bcacon and Icel got ;he worst of the start, and finished eventh and last 'respectively. Vite and Policy both ran good races, and had hard uck in being put-up against a strong >roposition like Black Reef. Critic, who an sudh an excellent race on Saturday, vas fourth, Ira fifth, and Kohnpatiki isth. Forfcshot was manifestly out of ondition, and was never prominent. Rill and Passivo were the only defccions from the Autumn Handicap, leaving i field of nine. Gunboat was nearly as ;ood a favourite as Sea Queen, while her® was a ' good' "deal ' of support or Mannpaio—an apparently unknown lorse. The racc was "practically one beweon Sea Queen and Gunboat, and these wo fought "out a finish for fully tlirco urlo'ngs. Succession, after being in tho end for half a mile, dropped back, but iamb again at the finish, and dead-heated Hth Longwood for fifth' place. Manulai, who was last with Hilarian.nearly ill the way, came with a late run in tho traight,' and finished seventh. Aimwell ras eighth, Afterthought ninth, and Hiarian last. : ■There were eight starters in the Waicline Hack Handicap, tho withdrawals icing Kohupatiki, Lady Volley, and Auora. Merrie Fly. who got well away vith Septimus, collapsed when tackled by Jndecided, who won somewhat easily, lappy. New Year, who was a big outsider,"made a big effort in the straight, rat could not get past. .Septimus,- . alliougli Mr. Gallagher's gelding had to :allop hard to keep his place. Tulloch. Ird was fourth. Tho Juvenile Handicap was a good beting race,'all the lop-weiglits being well upported. Blue Lake got the-best, .and iinapis the worst of tho start. The filly e'd all the way, and won with a bit in land. Longstep managed to draw up to he winner at the head of the straight, rat was easily shaken off. • Sinapis made ip a lot of ground, and was just beaten or third place. . Lambton, a likclyooking colt, was hemmed in twice during he race, and crime fifth. Odessa was ;ixth, Compliment seventh, and Confusion ast. ■ .. • - ; The Taulierinikau Handicap- furnished ho best .race of the day, the "judge giviiig lis decision that a half-nose -separated he placed horses. Merrie : Frank, who . was . with iaunlai atlthe start, was fifth,-Palestine ixth. Leahora seventh, Gawain eighth, nd Puraknu last. ' , The Shorts brought out twelve startrs—the -largest field of the day. The nly scratchiugs were Black Reef, Beulah, nd Hiriekoa. Aurora was' made afafm favourite, while Stoney: Falls ~was ilso well backed. From tho start Varnalever gave theotheTs a chance,, and won asily from a field whicli, at the business :nd, straggled all over the course. FEILDING J.C. EASTER MEETING. The weather, though fine overhead, was :old and bleak for the opening day of -he Feilding meeting. The race for the Cup was a pretty one :hough, in the end, tho winner had natters all her own way. Equitas regis:ered a smart performance in the Flying Handicap for which sho was a good farourito in the running. She seemed to jo .stopping at half way, but, at the' Inish, came away again. In this race Moil Ami got a very bad passage, or she night have won, as she finished very strongly. Backers opened badly when they pre'erretl Birkliue before Vibration in the >pening event. The favourite was first nit, and led down the back but, alter loing a furlong, Dervish joined bim, and vorried him the whole way. I'liere was a long delay at tho barrier, ;his being due tu Ascalop, Full Bate, and L'igerine repeatedly breaking through. iVhentho tapes lifted, Equitas, Hon Ami, ind l'ull Rate went off together, but the ast-named was on the outside and, getting over .mor,o ground than anything dse, Tigerine ran up to the favourite it the.turn, but the latter came awn.v lguin, and won comfortably. Winchester, tho favourite, :ould not go the pace set by Lionheart ind Sardonyx, and he was ridden in belind. At a mile, Lionheart and Sardonyx nad a twenty-length break on the reliainder of tho iield, who were piloted jy Winchester, and whipped in by Hylrant. Half a mile from home Xavier md Winchester were level, and in the ead, and both were hard ridden across :ho bottom. At tho last fenco Winches:er cried enough, and Xavier went on done. • Marton then came very fast, but Savier had only to be shaken up to refill his position. Marton was a. long way Jut of it in the first twelve furlongs md, had he been kept closer up, ho may lave won but, even if differently handled Kavier would. have still retained his lonours as hii covered more ground-than mything clso in tho race. The winner vas ridden by A. M'Connon who has not )een seen in the saddle for some time ;>a«t. Despite the failure of Winchester, anither Attwo'od-trained horse (Waiputere) vas made favourite in the Hack Hurdles, md sho won • comfortably at the finish, [/eolanter- kept her company over the ;reater part of the journey, but his jumpng was not sc good as that of the fnviiirite, and she tired badly. Burton, tho econd' favourite, was third, well back, md Cauldron, with All Trumps, were the inly others to finish. The Cup resulted in a boil-over, for the ittle-fan'eied' Lady Menschikoff' buried everything -for pace in the straight, and •an in an easy winner.
