THE CHAMPAGNE RIOTS. FIFTY ARRESTS. SOLDIERS CHARGE PILLAGERS By Telegraph—Press Association—CopyriEht Paris, April 16. Vine-dressers at Trepail barricaded the village aiul pillaged tlio residence of a wine merchant. The soldiery demolished the barricades, and, in order to stop devastation of the collars, charged with drawn swords. Fifty acres of vines belonging to Messrs. Moet and Chandon have been uprooted at Vernegay. Fifty arrests have been made in the disturbed area. FOREST SET ON FIRE. BALL CARTRIDGES SERVED TO TROOPS. (Rec. April 17, 9.25 p.m.) . Paris, April 17. There is now a general calm in the wine-growing districts, with the exception of Fontainsnray, where the forest was set on fire. Ball caitridges • have been served to twenty thousand troops in the Epernay district. A cordon has been drawn around Ay, and the troops have. been ordered to use the butt-end of their rifles against trespassers and rioters. The Hospital, stables, and schools have been converted into barracks.
