THE JESUITS
EXPULSIONS FROM, MOSCOW. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyrieht St. Petersburg, April 16. Leading Jesuits at Moscow have been expelled. The newspaper "NoToe Vremya" urges the expulsion of Polish Jesuits from St. Petersburg on the ground that they have obtained complete possession of the Roman Catholic schools. Tho "Kolokol," the organ of the Russian Orthodox Church," states, on the authority of official statistics, that since tho issue of the Ukase allowing freedom of conscience—April 30, 1905, to January 1 (Old Style), 1910—there have been 316,812 secessions from tho Orthodox Church, of whom over 237,033 had joined the Roman Communion. These secessions took place, however, in the Polish Governments of Warsaw, Inbolsk, Suwalki, and Siedlec especially. In these they numbered 106,338 persons between tho years 1905 and 1910. In the year. 1905 alone there were 116,367 secessions. In the Western Provinces of Wilna, Kowno, Grodno, Kicff. Podolia, Volkynia, Witebsk, Minsk, and Mohileff there were 65,531; in the year 1905 alone 37,457 secessions. But it must be remembered that in these provinces there were great numbers who were only nominally members of the Orthodox Church.
