(By Telegraph.-Prcss Association.) $ JOYNT CHALLENGE SHIELD. Auckland, April 16. The annual debate between representatives of the four University Colleges took place last evening, the subject being "Should the State continue to allow tho uso of the totalisator ?" The Victoria College, team (affirmative) was pitted against Canterbury College (negative), whilst tho Auckland University College (affirmative) met Otago University (nega-' tive). • The two teams upholding the affirmative side of the Question were, in the judge's opinion, superior in debating power.to'tho teams taking the opposite dde. The points allotted were as follow :—Victoria College, 185; Auckland University College, 171; Canterbury College, 169; Otago University, 103. Victoria College thus become the holder for the ensuing year of the Joynt Challenge Shield, which is at present held by Auckland.

ORANGE CONFERENCE. Christchureh,- April 16. The annual conference of tho Loyal Orange Institution of New Zealand opened on Saturday. E.W.G.M. K. Meredith presided, and on behalf of tho officers and delegates of the Grand Lodge welcomed tho Mayor of Christchui'eli (Mr. .C. Alii-, eon), who, in the course of a speech, said it gave him pleasure to welcome the Orangemen because he was convinced that they were banded together for one great purpose,- the unity of the British Empire. Over 200 delegates, representing 66 districts, and a great number of visitors from all parts of the Dominion, were present at the i opening session. The parade was largely attended this afternoon. ■ '

UNIVERSITY DELEGATES. • Auckland, April 15. The. university delegates were given a civic welcome this morning, the Mayor and Professor Detman being the speakers. ■ ■ , .- HON. J. CARROLL OPENS RAILWAY . . Auckland, April 13. The : official opening' of the.TowaiKawakawa section of the "Whangarei Railway by the Hon. James Carroll took place to-day. A largo number of visitors from Whangarei arrived by special train from Whangarei, these including members of the Railway Commission and detachments of the Public School Cadets. Kawakawa was decorated for the occasion... Speaking, at the luncheon, Mr. Carroll held out great hopes of progress and advancement of this part of- the Dominion in the near future.
