LIBRARIES AND THE PUBLIC.

CONFERENCE OPENED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, April 15. The Libraries Association Conference opened to-day. The southern delegates were welcomed by the Mayor (Mr. L. ,7. ISagnall) and the. president (Mr. F. \\\ Leys), and the speeches were acknowledged by Mr. M. Cohen (Dunedin) and ilr. A*tldnson (Wellington). The president urged that the best endeavours should be employed in bringing libraries more into line with the commercial and social life of our cities. Ho spoke of the relationship Mweeu libraries and public schools, and said a large sphere was open for catering for tho literary needs of tho country districts. Ho believed the city libraries could be used to meet this want without imposing financial burdens on the city taxpayer.
