PALMERSTON NEWS.

(From Our Special Correspondent.) Palmcrston North, April 15. The shooting season was opened yesterday by the Falmor.ston Gun Club with a match in which twenty-two competitors took part. Tho weather was all that could be desired for the sport, and there was somo excellent shootin-?. The main match was won by Mr. T. Edlin with a icoro of 2-1. Messrs. C. Green and J. Burmeister tying for second place with scores of 22. Tho prizes were trophies donated by Messrs. J. Mortenson, J. Bell, Jim., and N. I). Stubbs. A second match (six birds) was won by Mr. A. Zcinert. making the possible, and winning from twelve other competitors. A sweepstake, in which there were twenty competitors, was won by Mr. R. Soifert. Mr. G. H. Bygave every satisfaction as referee, and tho arrangements made by the secretary, Mr. AValter Turner, were most complete. Messrs. Dustins, Ltd., served an excellent luncheon and afternoon tea. The cricket match yesterday between a team from the local lodge of Druids and the Phoenix Cricket Club resulted in a very fine display of cricket, the lodgemen winning by 27 runs. The Druids batted first, and put up the fine score of 291. Wakeliii carried his bat right through the innings, scoring three over a century. The double figure scorers were Proud 65, Cornish 47, and Watchorn 39. Phoenix responded with 267 (Reed 97, Hemus 49, Mellor 31, T. Eyre 32, O'Connor 21). One of a pair of horses in a cab caused some excitement in the Square yesterday. Tho animal started kicking and then fell, and shortly afterwards died. Some excellent."baskets" hayo been obtained from the Manawatu River during the present fishing season. One angler has caught just on five hundred, averaging about two pounds apiece. The Manawatu Motor Cycle Club held a _ "reliability race" from 'Palmcrston to Wanganui and back yesterday, seventeen riders taking part in the contest. The results will not be known for a few days, as the points have to be mado up. The police are searching for a boy ef about-ten years of age, who has been missing from his home since Thursday. Tha boy was wearing a blue jersey when last seen. The fire brigade received a call about 1.30 yesterday morning, a fifteen-roomed two-story residence at Terrace End being on fire. The building was a very old one, and made a great blaze. It was owned by Mr. C. E. Waldesrave, and occupied by Mr. G. Hollier. The insurance on the residence was ,£SSO in the New Zealand office, and the contents w.ere covered to the amount of c£lso in the Australian Alliance office. The fortnightly meeting of tho Palmerston branch of tho St. John Ambulance Nursing Division was held on Thursday evening, when Nurse Lonergan gave instruction on nursing work in the direction of preparing patients for operations, and how to nurse the patient afterwards. A comprehensive syllabus was prepared for the next four months. St. Andrew's Church was crowded last night, when the organist, Mr. C. W. Naylor, gave another popular recital. The programme was most diversified, and was greatly enjoyed. Vocal numbers were rendered by Miss Millar, who sang "Abide With Me" and "Nearer my God to Thee" mostly pleasingly. The Rongotea Masonic Lodge will hold its annual installation of AV.M. and investiture 'of officers on Wednesday next. P.M. Bro'. J. Moncrieff, P.G.M., of Carterton, will act as installing master, and Wor. Bro. J. A. Nash, P.G.D.C, will officiate as master of ceremonies. Loyal Jlanawatu Lodge of Oddfellows hold its adjourned summoned meeting on Thursday night, Bro. W. S. Woodroofe, N.G., in the chair. The quarterly bal-ance-shffst was read and a'dopted. This showed that the sick and funeral fund had now reached over ,£'IOGO. One newmember was inducted and another proposed. Among the .visiting brethren, present was Bro. T. Bamber, P.P.G.M., who gave an interesting, account of visits to lodges in tho Wanganui district. A tremendous number of people assembled,' at tho Palmtrston railway station during yesterday. The express from Auckland was between three and four hours late, and arrived at Palmerstbn at the. same time as tho express from Wellington, with the result that tho congestion of the railway station was the .worst experienced for many months past, it being almost impossible to get about, and, accidents wera only averted by the exercise of the greatest care. The lat-o arrival of the Auckland express was responsible for nearly all other trains being behind .time, and the long periods people had to wait were wparying and monotonous. The staff at tho Palmtrstou Station had a very trying time, but they acquitted themselves most creditably under the difficulties. Tho Terrace End. Tennis Club commenced their tournament yesterday, and a number of rounds were played. The rain to-day, however, stopped the progress of tho tournament, which will be continued on Monday. Rain began to fall during last night, and has kept on intermittently all day, of a. drizzling nature. There was a good fall during the night, which will be an immense benefit to pastures, etc.
