DR. AKED'S FUTURE.
DISSATISFIED AY ITU NEW YORK CONDITIONS. Dr. G. V. Akcd, pastor of the Fifth Avenue Haptist Church in New York, made a statement to a representative of (lie Central News Agency before leaving New York for California, which is interesting in view of reports that lie has received a call to a San Francisco Church. He denies that that is the easo, and states that he is merely to preach three times in the city. ■ "I shiver with cold and fear at'tho thought of wrenching tho ties which have become intertwined with the lives of Mrs. Akcd and myself here," ho said. "If I could be content with-an-easy berth and a generous salary amongst the most charming people in the world, the position would be plain and clear and my future settled, but I cannot bo content with a work that seems to mo to bo small. 1 would rather have a third or a quarter of my present salary, as 1 used to have, and feel that 1 was doing snmo good j n the world than to have- a big salary and feel that 1 am, compared with my English life, wasting my time._ Tin? great project: we had in hand in New York has completely broken down.- We hrul in mind something that would have given us one of the highest churches in America,i Protestantism perhaps in tho Protestantism of the world. It was not until last Saturday Hint we' realised the impossibility o 'f this. .There lias heen much talk of my being asked to go hack to England. 1 have- not been asked to go back, but I must candidly confess that my heart is in English movements. English'movements I understand; American movements 1 do not understand."
The Bishop of Birmingham makes the followhrj; relorone.e. to tho .li!p;ir!,ur» of Dr. J.jwcll in Ins diocesan magazine:— "I have found myself us a citizen' so constantly gratoful for the lino which Mr. Jowctt has taken on public questions, mm as a teacher of religion so frequently in entire syn.patl.y ivil-h liis teaching, that. I cannot liuA* desire' to express on.behalf ofmaiiy'besides myself, the-deepest : regret .'.that wo are losing him from amongst our ciyic and religious leaders. -
