Nominations for the Marlborough' Racing Club's riutunm meeting close with Mr. L. Griffiths (secretary, Blenheim), on Saturday evening. As the programme is a good one, and the club deservedly popular,-, there should be a good response from 'owners and trainers in this district. His Majesty the King has presented a AYest-vNorfolk -Hunt Club, to be competed for in one of the events at''their , steenlcdiaso mooting to be held at Fakenham" Norfolk, on Easter Monday. His Majesty will patronise a fspcciall.r-arrangc.il race -.meeting at Leopardstown on Tuesday, July 11, in connection with his visit to Dublin. Kin:? Edward, on the occasion of his last visit to Ireland, attended a meeting on the same course.
When Sceptre was purchased as a yearling .for .£10,500 it was predicted that Sievier would never sec his money again, but she proved a most profitable investment, and after- winning several races with her he sold her for ,£23,000. So with AI. Blanc, who gave ■ .£39,375 for Flying Fox. He was also supposed to have made a bad bargain, but the great son of Ormo sired Javdy, who was sold for X) 0,000; Val d'Or, who brought ,£28,000; Gouvernant, .£20,000; and Adam, Xlo,nno. Besides, the stud fee of Flying Fox was GOO guineas.
A . Sydney i paper ears:—"Tho niost-tnlked-of subject iu Sydney trotting circles just now is the challenge published by trainer D. J. Price to match tho New Zealand mare Sal Tasker against the Sydney horse Denver Hnon for .£SOO a side, the race to take place on Victoria Park racecourse within six weeks. Mr. Frank Geddes, the owner of Denver Huon, has replied that ho cannot see his way clear to race so soon, as (he horse has been ont of the hands of his regular trainer, A.. Millsom, . for tome months, but. ho has met Price lo.the extent of placing a deposit of .£IOO iu tho hands of the secretary of the Australian Trotting Club to bind a match for Denver Huon to race Sal Tasker on Victoria Park track in three months' time, best two out of three two-mile heats, in harness, with galloping pacemakers."
Advice from Melbourne state that Hie racing mare Crucinella, who has not been doing well lately, lias been sent to Heidelberg for a spell. Since the weights were made public Goodwin Park (7st. 91b.) has been the public choice in the Feilding Cup, and, when the double volumes were opened early this week, he was considerably sought after by backers. The,chief favourite for tlie other leg of the double is Equitas (9st. 51b.), but, as it is now definitely certain that Full Kate will start at Feilding, backers will no doubt pay him somo attention, as, when last th'o Officer gelding met Equitas, he presented her with -lib., and a beating. Mr. Henrys now makes the difference between them to Ik 81b., and most people will agree that, at these figures, a most interesting race should eusue.
No fewer than twenty-three horses made the final payment for the Easter Handicap at EWerslie-a fact that should bo very gratifying to Hniulicapper 0. Morse With the withdrawal of Equitas, which was announced yesterday, it still appears as jf a record field will- go to the post. In Auckland tho favourite selection is Antoinette (7st. 101b.), but this illlv's performances in public are hardly sufficient to justify her position, and, with the presence of a- strong contingent of visitors, it is quite likely that, when the field is dispatched on Saturday, the totalisator will show at least three of tho starters to bo better backed than the present favourite. A recent visitor to Cambridge informed the writer that Salute was looking and going well, and it is only required that this smart mare should be stripped by R. Ilannon, with her best looks showing, for her to become a strong fancy. Then, too, (here is Royal Soult, Fort William, and Formby The first-named of this trio'is considered to bs back to his best form, and, if this is so, it must be remembered in his favour that the hnndicappor has not been harsh on him. Fort William was timed to run the last mile of the Close Handicap at Napier in Imin. 4lsce. Allowing that tho Grconnieadows track i-s ■> f-t.st one, this was still a very good gallop, and shows what the feoult colt is opable of. Were Formby (7st. Gil).) to "•'•■i back to within a siono of hi.., .b ls t two-year-old form, he would surely be entitled to consideration under" such a light impost. There is just a chance that he is back to something approaching his best form, for it is worthy of nnto that Sir Tristram and Huininin-' Binl have been withdrawn in his favour." The remaining sittr pieces at Tiller-lie will be the Great Northern Onks, in which a very weak field will oppose Antoinette and Monoplane, and the Gro.it Northern Champagne Stakes, in which Orton is the only gelding in the race, and, consequently, carries the lightest weight (fet 71b.). Mr. Greenwood's colt, who lina been sent north specially for this race, showed sood form at Awapuni, in the
Mitiiiiwatu Slakes. wlioi'O ho only mic(Minibpd in the \»>i couple of striilos to iMiiiburtit, ;iml tlion. nfler lie had in:nb all the ruiiniii!;. How much ihi\t rncp woulil improve liiiu is difficult to .-ay, lint it would certainly be nenror 1-tlli. ilmn 71b., for tlic is :i vpi'.v liizy track worker. .M'lor lln> race was i-vpr » prominent aiitiiority made the romnik that the Champaunc was now beyond question.
The Wairnrnpa li.iciny Chili's Autunin .Meeting will ho hol.l on the Tnuherinikaii coui'K'?. Fpiither-ton, on Saturday (April 15) and .Monday (April 17). particular* as to train sivvaiigcmcnls nrc ailver'iicil in this issue.
All the- southern lior.-cs enpaged nt Hie Auckland ltacing Club's meeting have now put in an appearance, .'it Kllerslie, I'ho hurdler Jlaidi boins the latest arrival.
Bully continiies to do excellent work at J'lllprslip, and proniisps to start .1 very warm furnurile for the Brighton Hurdles on Saturday next.
The Sydney "Arrow" says thai at Dniulwick on Thursday last Trafalgar really created a better impression than Conifidy King, and there is no doubt as to the chestnut being in great trim. It must not bo overlooked, though, thai he will be conceding Comedy King several pounds in each of the weight-for-ago races, that 7lb. foaling allowance givint; the English horse somel'liing. of a, pull, now that he is really four years old. Lady Medallist is another backers will now be taking into their Autumn Stakes calculntion.s but though she is a great galloper, it will surprise me it she proves quite up to the standard of either Comedy King or Trafalear. The trio will carry the following weights:—Trafalgar. 9st.\ilb.; Lady Medallist, Sst. 121b. ; and Comedy King, Bst. 71b.-
On Saturday (hero will he racing at Tauherimkau, Ellerslie, and Grcymouth. Local sportsmen will mostly patronise the 'Wairarapa Racing Club's meeting at Tauherinikaii. Special train arrangements havo been made, and good sport is prumised at the. fixture.
Mendip having become affected with muscle soreness after the Wangamii meeting has for some time. bc*n spelling at Hawera, and though the St. Paul gelding is now on the mend his trainer doubts whether he can be got ready again in time for the. AVanganui Jlay meeting. During the season Mendip has done good service for H. Spratt, having won about .£975 in stakes.
The Hawera writer, "Sir Single," says that subsequent to the AVanganui meeting. Trneshot. in O. Cox's stable, became afffcted with a form of strangles, having evidently contracted the disease while in 'Wnnganui. She is now all right again, and as she has been doing well for the past three weeks or so will in all probability figure among the starters at I'eilding.
