JOTTINGS FROM WANGANUI.
IBy Telecraph.-Special CorrcsroEdent.) Wanganui, April 12. Ihe A.51.P. Socioty has taken up another Wanganui borough loan, its tender for .£3.1,000 for tramway extension having been accepted. In the coin-to nf his first report', ju~i after his arrival'here. Jlr. \V. T. Mansefield, the nev.- boroupth ranger, spoke adversely on the system of carrying out private drainage connection by the borough staff and advised that 'it be left to private enterprise. Hitherto the council has found that it can control the v.ork butter and get more satisfaction by entrusting it to its own staff, and, at a meeting last night, it was decided to make .10 change. Tho local Labour party lias decided to nominate four candidates for the council and one or two for the Harbour Board election. Their platform for former elections includes filtration of the water supply, a better method of collecting rubbish, 'day labour on borough works, municipal abattoirs, improvements in street lighting, and sanitation in outlying portions of the borough. Regarding the harbour question it is understood that the party supports the same policy as the town members of the present board who have been reinforced by Mr. Mackay (the- Mayor) whoso cx-officio seat is abolished by the new Act. This makes five members on this ticket, and as (lie town has the privilege of returning six members out of ten, it i.-s probable that the Labour party will put forward a candidate as the sixth man on the same ticket. Mr. A. Hatrick leads tho small party which wants the port in town. So far Messrs. G. .Spriggins and A. Itobinson are announced in support of this idea. When the District High School was destroyed by fire some weeks ago three rooms were immediately reinstated to fill temporary requirements. Tho Education Board are now advised that tho Department has granted the full sum required t/i reinstate the building to its former dimensions. An unusually large gatliering of Old Boys is expected at the Collegiate .School this Easter, additional interest to the usual Easter functions being lent by the opening of the new building by Ihe Governor. The programme includes the laying of the foundation stone of the new chapel by the Bishop of Wellington on Sunday, the annual sports and' Old Boys' reunion on Monday, and the opening of tho new college, followed by a ball on Tuesday.
