OLYMPIA RINK.

SKATING SEASON OPENED. ; For.the first time in many months the merry roll and clatter of skates resounded cheerfully over the floor of the Olyinpia Rink yesterday afternoon. The opening of the ,season brought out niaTiy devotess of the popular winter pastime, who, had evidently not forgotten,' amid the pleasures of summer, the joys and fascination of rinking. In the afternoon the attendance was fairly large. No doubt more skaters .would have attended but for the non-observance of the usual half-holiday. In the evening the floor was occupied to something like its full capacity. In a word, the rink has sprung at a bound to its old place in popular favour.

A charming feature of the. evening session was the clear but cnbdnod light that shone over the skating floor. The proprietors of the establishment have taken advantage of the off season to overhaul the lighting system, and to introduce a beautiful decorative scheme. The rink is now lighted by a nunierou9 array of hanging electric globes and.gas lights, most of them enclosed in Chinese lanterns of coloured paper. Big hanging umbrellas prettily coloured are a prominent feature in the decorative scheme. The effect produced is one of rich but soft colouring, which effectually tempers the glare that otherwise would radiate from the array of powerful lights. At both afternoon and evening sessions tho Iliiik Band was in attendance, and by its efforts added greatly to the pleasure of the gaily-whirling throng of skaters. Henceforth the rink will be open both in the afternoon ami evening, and beginners will bo instructed in the art of skating at a morning session.
